Democrats: Banning Gun Sales To People On A List The Orlando Shooter Was NOT ON Will Stop Shootings

In this Jan. 4, 2013 photo, handguns are displayed in the sales area of Sandy Springs Gun Club and Range, in Sandy Springs, Ga. In Connecticut and Colorado, scenes of the most deadly U.S. mass shootings in 2012, people were less enthusiastic about buying new guns at the end of the year than in most other states, according to an Associated Press analysis of new FBI data. The biggest surges in background checks for people who want to carry or buy guns occurred in states in the South and West. (AP Photo/Robert Ray)

The last bodies had hardly hit the floor in Orlando when Congressional Democrats lined up to introduce new legislation to limit the right of law abiding Americans to own firearms. I saw “law abiding” because the only people who pay attention to these silly laws are law abiding citizens, “criminals” ignore them.

Without doubt the most stupid idea thus far, though, in fairness, it is only Monday, is the idea of banning firearms sales to people on a terrorist watch list. This idea first cropped up after the San Bernardino shooting. It was a profoundly stupid idea then, and, given what we already know about the Orlando shooting, it is even more idiotic today.

Senate Democrats are renewing their push to keep people on terrorist watch lists from buying firearms.

Sen. Charles E. Schumer will be leading a noon call Monday along with several Democratic colleagues, including Sen. Bill Nelson, a Florida Democrat who has been in Orlando.

It’s a reprise of an effort that saw a procedural vote last December on an amendment offered by Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif . That amendment would block individuals on a consolidated terror watch list from legally purchasing firearms.

The idea of linking the terror watchlist to the purchase of firearms sounds reasonable enough. No one wants terrorist to buy guns, right? Because all terrorist buy their firearms from licensed firearms dealers. That’s the law.

In fact, the terror watchlist system is a bureaucratic boondoggle. There are tens of millions of names on the list. There is no real oversight in adding people to the list because if you are a federal law enforcement agent do you really want to be known as the guy who let Mohammed al-Goatbuggery on the airplane. Once you are on the list there is virtually no way to get removed. Then names on the list don’t necessarily have social security numbers attached to them so sorting out who is on the list versus who has the same name as someone on the list is impossible. As the FBI collaborates with left wing organizations like the Southern Poverty Law Center, who believe that white Christians are the real terrorists in the USA, you can be sure that the impact of such a law would fall, like IRS audits, heavily on any group with “Tea Party” or “Patriot” in its name.

More to the point Omar Mateen has licenses out the wazoo and worked for a Department of Homeland Security contractor. He’d been visited three times by the FBI but no one did anything. He was not on a terror watchlist.
