Despite his repeated assertions that there will be no new US ground involvement in Iraq, Obama has definitely entered slippery slope territory.

About 1,000 paratroopers from the 82nd Airborne Division will deploy to Iraq in late January, the Defense Department announced Friday.

The soldiers from 3rd Brigade Combat Team will train, advise and assist Iraqi security forces as part of Operation Inherent Resolve, said Pentagon Press Secretary Rear Adm. John Kirby during a briefing Friday.

The paratroopers are preparing to deploy for a nine-month tour.

Were it not for the price to be paid by young men and women of all services, one would be tempted to crow about the abject stupidity and ineptitude on the part of Obama that allowed a victory handed to him on a silver platter in 2009 to be squandered, that handed a potential ally over to one of our enemies, that fostered the rise of the very ISIS that we are fighting today.

Where will this lead? Barring a deus ex machina that eliminates ISIS and restores some semblance of what passes for stability in the Arab world our involvement is going to increase and the next president will be left with an ugly mess in Iraq and Syria that is totally the creation of Barack Obama.
