@Politico Hires Avowed Bigot David Chalian

During the RNC convention, we were treated to the story of the Washington Bureau Chief for Yahoo News waxing philosophic on the Republican party:

During live coverage of the Republican National Convention here in Tampa, Yahoo News Washington bureau chief David Chalian provided the perfect example of the pervasive anti-Republican bias Mitt Romney faces in his bid to unseat President Barack Obama.

In video broadcast Monday night by ABC and Yahoo over the Internet, Chalian can be heard claiming that GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney and his wife Ann are unconcerned about the fate of residents of the New Orleans area who are currently being hit by Hurricane Isaac.

“They aren’t concerned at all,” Chalian can be heard on the live broadcast. “They are happy to have a party with black people drowning.”

That line elicits laughter from several employees listening in on the joke.

Unable to stand the scrutiny, Yahoo News disavowed their own policy and threw Chalian under the bus.

“David Chalian’s statement was inappropriate and does not represent the views of Yahoo!. He has been terminated effective immediately. We have already reached out to the Romney campaign, and we apologize to Mitt Romney, his staff, their supporters and anyone who was offended.”

If you were concerned about Mr. Chalian’s career well-being you can relax. He’s been hired by Politico.

“David screwed up, admitted he screwed up and paid the price of losing his job for screwing up. He certainly would have been held accountable for the lapse in judgment had he been on the POLITICO staff at the time,” Harris told POLITICO. “He’s made clear that remark did not reflect his personal views or professional standards. This is a journalist who carries with him more than a decade of accomplishment and a well-earned reputation for fairness. We do not believe that lapse in one moment negates a reputation held in high regard by political professionals in both parties. He’s superbly well-qualified to help us achieve a strategic goal that is very important for POLITICO.”

Indeed. I’m sure he is a great fit for a reflexively biased publication like Politico. And to the extent that their “strategic goal” is patently dishonest reporting on Republicans and conservatives I’m sure Chalian will be an ideal fit.
