WHAT'S ON TAP?
Today on Capitol Hill...
It's a district work week (and Rosh Hashanah), so Congress is out, but the funding deadline is one week out. It's looking like President Donald Trump, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) will meet on Thursday. I remain skeptical as to whether that meeting will bear any fruit other than some Dem talking points, but we'll see. While Schumer appears to be itching for a shutdown, not all Senate Dems are on board:

White House What's Up
President Trump had a busy Monday. We learned more about the proposed TikTok deal, he delivered a major announcement about the administration's efforts to address autism, and he officially designated Antifa a domestic terror group.
On Tuesday, he'll be even busier: He delivers remarks to the UN General Assembly mid-morning, followed by two bilateral meetings and a multilateral meeting. In the evening, he'll deliver remarks at the UN Leaders' Reception before he and First Lady Melania depart New York and return to D.C.

Full Court Press...
It looks like the trial of Ryan Routh for the attempted assassination of (then-candidate) Trump is wrapping up, with closing arguments set to be delivered Tuesday morning, so we'll be keeping an eye out for the verdict on that one.
The Supreme Court handed the Trump administration another win on Monday, granting the administration's application for stay in Slaughter v. Trump, regarding the removal of an FTC commissioner, and setting oral argument in the case for December.

Here's the round-up of notable decisions from Monday:
- ✅ Slaughter v. Trump (SCOTUS ruling — see above)
- ❌ Thakur v. Trump (termination of federal research funding/grants) — Judge Rita Lin (Northern District of California) GRANTS plaintiffs' motion for preliminary injunction and provisional class certification as to additional agency defendants.
- ❌ State of California v. HHS (IRS & Medicaid sharing information for immigration enforcement) — Judge Vince Chhabria (Northern District of California) GRANTS plaintiffs' motion to amend preliminary injunction to include Kentucky and Wisconsin.
COMING ATTRACTIONS
President Trump, as noted above, will be meeting with Sen. Chuck Schumer and Rep. Hakeem Jeffries on Thursday to discuss the government funding deadline/potential shutdown. He's also set to meet with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on Thursday.
On Wednesday, "Vice President JD Vance will visit Concord, North Carolina, where he will deliver remarks on President Trump’s tax cuts for working families and the Trump Administration’s commitment to empowering state and local law enforcement."
MORNING MUSING
There are countless well-known "Charlies," so my reference to three in particular is in no way intended as a slight on any others. However, the interrelation of these three has come to mind in recent days, and I feel compelled to make mention of it.
Having seen "Je suis Charlie" employed in several social media posts since the assassination of Charlie Kirk, the connection was made — not because the infamous 2015 attack on French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo was all that similar to what happened to Kirk, but because both circumstances carry with them heavy cultural significance, and declaring "I am Charlie" serves, as Joe Cunningham noted here, as "a statement of solidarity with those slain by a senseless act of violence."
I was also reminded of Charlie Gard, the British infant whose tragic medical case (Charlie suffered from mitochondrial DNA depletion syndrome) captured our attention in 2017.

Kirk's assassination, of course, is front and center because of its recency and the undeniable impact it has had on the "national (and international) conversation." In his life, Charlie Kirk had an outsized influence for someone so young. I'll confess, I never really stopped and thought about the credit he deserved for the success of Turning Point USA. (Certainly, I was aware of and acknowledged it — but it was more of an afterthought; just part of the political landscape I pretty well took for granted.) In his death, one which came so suddenly and brutally and for all to see, and one which has now become a political/cultural Rorschach, it appears that Charlie Kirk's influence and legacy will be far larger and more lasting than I suspect he ever imagined.
And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. — Romans 8:28
