Have a Seat, Director: Comey Being Interviewed by Secret Service Over '86 47' Post

In a bit of a role reversal, former FBI Director James Comey now finds himself on the hot seat as he's being interviewed by the Secret Service following a troubling Instagram post seeming to call for the assassination of President Donald Trump.

On Thursday, Comey exercised what can only be described as extraordinarily poor judgment and shared a photo to his Instagram account with the numbers "86 47" — the implicit message being that Trump, the 47th president, needs to be "86'd" or gotten rid of in some manner. Comey later took the post down and feigned ignorance at it being interpreted as calling for violence — you know, being the naif that one would expect a former director of the nation's top law enforcement agency and former federal prosecutor to be, of course.

Strangely enough, that hasn't spared him the scrutiny of his now former agency or the Secret Service — they tend to take presidential assassination references somewhat seriously.

So, on Friday, Comey sat for an interview with the Secret Service.

Former FBI Director James Comey was escorted by US Secret Service agents to their Washington Field Office on Friday afternoon for an interview, according to law enforcement sources.

Comey will be interviewed by agents investigating a social media post he posted Thursday showing shells in the sand on a beach spelling out “86 47,” which has become a popular social media code for removing Trump from the presidency, according to the law enforcement source.

Comey is not in custody and is appearing voluntarily, the source said.

Given that it was voluntary, it's nice that he was "escorted" by USSS agents to their field office.

Sadly, we won't be privy to the interview (unless Comey leaks his notes of it to the press), but:

It is expected that Comey will be asked if he intended the message as a threat, or to inspire others who might consider an act of violence against Trump, the source said. Ultimately, a decision on whether the case is chargeable as a threat against the president may lie with the US attorney in Washington.

Of course, it's probably safe to assume Comey will deny that he intended it as a threat, but the fact that he's even having to sit for an interview over it is at least refreshing.

As noted, the charging decision will lie with the U.S. Attorney in Washington...currently Jeanine Pirro. RedState will continue to follow this story and provide updates as they become available.
