WHAT'S ON TAP?
Today on Capitol Hill...
The only hearing slated for Monday is for the Rules Committee — but expect there to be some continued buzz surrounding the FISA reauthorization vote, as well as Ukraine and Israel funding.
White House What's Up
President Joe Biden is slated to host two meetings on Monday: one with Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shyaa Al-Sudani; one with Czech Republic Prime Minister Petr Fiala.
Full Court Press...
The Supreme Court will hear oral argument in two cases on Monday:
- Snyder v. United States — Involving money received by the former mayor of Portage, Indiana, examining whether section 666 criminalizes gratuities, i.e., payments in recognition of actions the official has already taken or committed to take, without any quid pro quo agreement to take those actions.
- Chiaverini v. Napoleon, OH — Examining whether Fourth Amendment malicious prosecution claims are governed by the charge-specific rule, as the Second, Third, and Eleventh circuits hold, or by the "any-crime" rule, as the Sixth Circuit holds.
The big story of the day, of course, will be the Manhattan criminal trial of former President Donald Trump, set to get under way Monday.
MORNING MUSING
Happy Tax Day, y'all! Hope you're finding a way to celebrate in style. (Suspect I'm not the first to notice that it coincides with the sinking of the Titanic, the Boston Marathon bombing, and the Notre Dame Cathedral fire.) I know I shouldn't be glad to have a refund coming (as that means I gave the government an interest-free loan), but if I'm being honest, it beats having to write out a fat check like I did last year, compliments of career/life changes.
LIGHTER FARE
Too soon?
