World-renowned libertarian economist Dan Mitchell exposes the myth of Cuba’s “successful” health care system, how that relates to what’s happening in Venezuela, and what U.S. legislators with a penchant for socialism should learn from the island’s economic fiasco.

Mitchell joins Heartland Institute’s Health Care News (HCN) podcast host (and RedState front page contributor) Sarah Lee to discuss his piece on The Myth of Cuba’s Glorious Health Care System. In that piece, Mitchell breaks down how abysmal health care access is under 50 years of Castro’s socialist regime in Cuba, pulling from the writing of other scholars and economists to make his case. Mitchell explains how Cuba actually has three distinct health care systems: one high-functioning system for the party elite; one state-of-the art system for “medical tourists” mostly devoted to cosmetic surgeries and primarily used for public relations; and one tragic and decrepit system for the actual Cuban people. He also discusses the ways in which Venezuela is suffering under the same “command economy” and why flirtation with socialism, particularly as it relates to the U.S. health care system, is so troubling.
