As it stands now, things look good for Ron DeSantis’ re-election prospects.
Florida’s popular Republican governor has consistently polled ahead of his Democratic opponent Charlie Crist in all but one poll to date, and in all but just a couple of them the leads have been well outside the margin of error. DeSantis currently has a polling lead average of four points with less than two months to go before the November election.
But even though DeSantis appears to be in the driver’s seat, he’s still smartly mashing down on the gas pedal in touting his accomplishments while at the same time taking on woke critics like California Gov. Gavin Newsom with one had tied behind his back and a beer in the other.
Crist, too, has been out on the campaign trail, but in his case, he’s been trying to portray himself as the far more “decent” option to hold the office than DeSantis. “Decency is on the ballot” is something Crist has often said when talking to Florida voters in what has been a familiar refrain among hypocritical Democrats since the Trump days.
But in a video of a Crist event from March that resurfaced on Monday, the infamous political chameleon is seen in front of small group of Pinellas County Democrats comparing himself to both Jesus Christ and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in the span of sixty seconds while referring to DeSantis as “DeSatan” — almost immediately after he declared that the election was about “being kind to everyone”:

How’s this for a jarring segue? “This is an election about decency, about being decent to one another, about being kind to everyone. It’s called a Florida for all. We got a divider on the other side and a uniter over here. You know some people call him DeSatan?” https://t.co/Tv13QVgMxP

I mean how cringe can one possibly get? Crist’s comments likening himself to Jesus Christ – jokingly or not – easily put him in contention for most cringe political comment of the year (right next to First Lady Jill Biden’s embarrassing “breakfast tacos” debacle). And beyond the obscene nature of the comparison, Crist’s name isn’t even pronounced like Christ’s. Good grief.
In response, DeSantis campaign director of rapid response Christina Pushaw told The Daily Caller that Crist was taking “self-absorption” to a whole “new level”:
“Charlie Crist has always been self-absorbed, but comparing himself to the second coming of Jesus Christ is a new level of bizarre delusion. He’s beyond embarrassing — and it’s only September,” DeSantis rapid response director Christina Pushaw said in a statement to the Caller.
I’m hoping DeSantis gets asked about this at his next press conference, because if his response is anything like the response he gave in August when asked about comments from Crist where he called him a dictator, it will be absolutely golden.
Not that DeSantis needed the gift from Crist, but he gave him one all the same.
As always, stay tuned!
