The Jokes Write Themselves After Price of 'Eat the Rich' Anti-Capitalism Popsicles Is Revealed

It never fails to amaze me how the same people who rail against the alleged “perils” of capitalism are usually among the first to partake in it when it suits their purposes – political, social, or otherwise.

Such has apparently been the case in New York City and Santa Monica, California, the two places where “Eat the Rich” popsicles are being sold (for a limited time) this week.

The Brooklyn-based MSCHF, which is the same “artist collective” that was responsible for the controversial blood-filled “Satan shoes” back in 2021, designed popsicles in the forms of billionaires Jeff Bezos, Mark Zuckerberg, Elon Musk, Bill Gates, and Jack Ma ostensibly on grounds that they will “start a conversation,” according to a report from CBS News.

Per Bloomberg News, the food truck in NYC that made the ice-cold concoctions available to the city’s residents sold out of Musk, Bezos, and Zuckerberg popsicles on Monday.

In a video tweet shared Tuesday, Reuters helpfully pointed out that you “can take a bite out of capitalism” by buying the popsicles. Not mentioned in the text of the tweet but noted in the video itself is that the price of the frozen treat – which one customer in the video pointed out is “creamy” with a “strawberry” flavoring – is… $10:

Independent journalist Talia Jane interviewed the “ice cream man” who was hired to sell the treats to eager consumers. He told her he was “being paid well” for his services:

As the headline indicated, the jokes indeed wrote themselves as folks weighed in on the story.

“$10 “Eat the Rich” popsicles is the most U.S. Capitalism thing ever. Reminds me of that @AOC ‘Tax the Rich’ sweatshirt she was shilling for $58. The hypocrisy oozes,” observed one.

“You know capitalism has won forever when an enterprising small businessman is selling ludicrously overpriced popsicles so hipsters can literally eat the rich,” wrote another.

And finally, someone calling themselves “Georgina Rose” responded by using my new favorite term for faux anti-capitalists.

“In Washington Square Park here in nyc, there’s an ice cream truck selling $10 popsicles to ‘eat the rich.’ I’m going to go out on a limb here and say selling overpriced popsicles to end capitalism is peak champagne socialism larp.”

“Champagne socialism” – perfect. Make sure to use it next time you come in contact with an “Occupy Wall Street” type who is lecturing you on how awful, in his view, capitalism has been for America while enjoying his freedom of speech, continuously monitoring notifications on his iPhone, and occasionally looking down to make sure his Nike shoes are still perfectly tied.
