The media, Democrats, and even some Republicans flew into a tizzy on Wednesday after President Trump’s answer to a question during a press briefing about whether or not “win, lose, or draw” he would “commit … to a peaceful transferal of power” after the election. The question elicited this response from Trump:
Q. Mr. President, real quickly: Win, lose, or draw in this election, will you commit here, today, for a peaceful transferal of power after the election? […]
Trump: Well, we’re going to have to see what happens. You know that. I’ve been complaining very strongly about the ballots. And the ballots are a disaster. And — and —
The exchange went back and forth for a bit, but because Trump was seemingly non-committal, the press and Democrats erupted in outrage, as did some Republicans who either did not hear the poorly worded “win, lose, or draw” question Trump responded to or who otherwise did not want to get caught up in the media’s “let’s find out if Republicans will condemn this” gotcha games.
White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany was, of course, asked about Trump’s answer during today’s presser by ABC News reporter Jon Karl right out of the gate. She noted that the revised phrasing of the question he asked was not the question that the “Playboy reporter” (Brian Karem) asked yesterday, where the words “win, lose, or draw” were used. She also zinged Karem via her answer to Karl by suggesting that maybe it’s the “deranged wish” of Karem that Trump would commit to a “peaceful transfer of power” if he won.
Watch:
. @PressSec: "[The Playboy reporter] asked, 'win lose or draw if [Trump] would accept the transfer of power.' I'm not entirely sure if he won why he would accept the transfer of power. Maybe that's the deranged wish of the reporter, but that's not how governing works." pic.twitter.com/2SEOMs9ztf

McEnany went on to clarify to both Karl and NBC News reporter Peter Alexander that Trump would indeed accept the results of a “free and fair election” – key words being free and fair.
Watch:
.@jonkarl: "If the president loses this election, will this White House, will this president, assure us that there will be a peaceful transfer of power?"
.@PressSec: "The president will accept the results of a free and fair election."

Also in her answer, McEnany turned the tables on Karl, pointing out that maybe they should be asking these questions of Democrats including prominent Biden supporter and failed 2016 Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, who said just last month that “Joe Biden should not concede under any circumstances.”
Watch:
White House @PressSec Kayleigh McEnany: "The President will accept the result of a free and fair election. But, I think that your question is more fitting to be asked of Democrats who have already been on the record that they won't accept the results in the election…" pic.twitter.com/cOoeay0gSP

Karem apparently became triggered over the press secretary’s answer because she couldn’t be bothered to say his name. Heh:
Kayleigh stings the Playboy reporter and he just can't deal. https://t.co/ZsKWbcGb16

. @PressSec's first question is about Brian Karem's question from yesterday. She immediately responded:
"You are referring to the question asked by the Playboy reporter?" pic.twitter.com/mrc4zqK5Af

Karem, who is also a CNN analyst, is a notoriously unprofessional media figure who has clashed with the White House in the past. He’s also known for yelling at McEnany as she walks away from the podium, as he did last week.
McEnany’s answer about Trump and the transfer of power won’t satisfy his critics, but then again if it’s ok for Democrats to be non-committal on accepting election results and in some cases actually encouraging the Democratic presidential nominee not to concede – period, then why should Trump give a definitive answer at this stage in the race?
