As the House Judiciary Committee begins the Jerry Nadler version of the clown show public impeachment inquiry hearings today, talk is increasing in Washington, DC of nervous Democratic House members weighing alternative options to impeachment. This after House Intelligence Committee Chair Adam Schiff’s pre-Thanksgiving show trial of “star witnesses” failed to move the needle with voters.

The Hill reports:

CNN senior global affairs analyst Bianna Golodryga said Tuesday that she’s hearing “rumblings” within the Democratic caucus that perhaps the party “should just go with censure” instead of trying to impeach President Trump.

“You’re now hearing rumblings within, Democrats saying, ‘Maybe we should just go with censure,’ or not really knowing how to move forward on this given where the president is and given where Republicans are,” said Golodryga, who joined CNN after stints with ABC, CBS and Yahoo News.

Recent polls done in key battleground states show Congressional Democrats are understandably panicking about the prospect of impeaching President Trump, especially during a crucial election year:

Surveys taken in Arizona, Florida, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Nevada, New Hampshire, North Carolina and Wisconsin show an average of 51 percent opposing impeachment and 44 percent supporting it, according to a Tuesday Washington Post story.

In addition to those swing state numbers, polls taken during the first round of impeachment inquiry hearings showed a dramatic drop in support for impeachment among a core voting bloc for both major parties: independent voters.

Also, it’s not just vulnerable Democrats up for re-election next year who are concerned with how the impeachment inquiry proceedings are playing out with voters. As I wrote last week, impeachment proponent Brenda Lawrence (D-MI) – who represents a safe district – said during a podcast interview two Sundays ago that she had changed her mind and favored censure instead. Her rationale was how divided the country was and how close we were to a presidential election.

48 hours later she changed her tune again, presumably due to pressure from House Democratic leaders who didn’t want to further fracture their fragile caucus.

With reports swirling that the actual House vote on impeachment itself could be delayed til the new year, concerns are growing on Capitol Hill that dragging out the process will even further erode what little support remains for impeachment.

The left’s non-stop obsession with impeaching Trump from day one has led to impeachment fatigue settling in among the independent and swing voters they desperately need to not only hold on to the House, but to win the presidential election.

If they do lose next year, Democrats have no one to blame but themselves for how this has so spectacularly backfired.
