Democrats might be under the impression that a majority of voters are on their side when it comes to impeaching President Trump, but a new poll indicates that what support they do have is starting to crumble.

Morning Consult reports:

As House Democrats begin to release transcripts of closed-door testimony and prepare for public hearings as part of their impeachment inquiry into Donald Trump, public support for impeaching the president has fallen.

The latest Morning Consult/Politico poll found that 47 percent of voters favor the House voting to impeach Trump, down 4 percentage points from the share that backed it in an Oct. 11-13 poll. At the same time, 43 percent of voters oppose the House impeaching Trump, statistically in line with figures from the four other polls conducted on the issue since House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) announced her support for the impeachment inquiry in late September. Each of the surveys have a 2-point margin of error.

The full poll results can be read here. It’s almost 500 pages long and I didn’t sift through it, but I assume the shift in support is among independents, since Morning Consult noted Republican disapproval and Democrat approval was unchanged.

This news comes on top of a poll released last week that showed 52% of the American people do no believe Trump’s call was an impeachable offense.

As I wrote at the time, this is a nightmare scenario for House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and House Intel Chair Schiff, who in spite of saying they’d be willing to lose the House over this issue have very deep concerns about how this will play out among vulnerable House Democrats in the months to come (which is one reason why Pelosi initially balked at the idea of impeachment and largely stayed out of the original faux inquiry for months).

The fact that their support wall is beginning to show cracks might be why they decided to start “open” impeachment hearings just two weeks before Thanksgiving, when less people will be paying attention:

Next week, the House Intelligence Committee will hold its first open hearings as part of the impeachment inquiry.

On Wednesday, November 13, 2019, we will hear from William Taylor and George Kent.

On Friday, November 15, 2019, we will hear from Marie Yovanovitch.
