Keith Ellison's Meeting With Fraud Family Continues to Haunt Him As Sixth Member Prepares to Plead Guilty

The sixth member of a Somali family in Minnesota is scheduled to plead guilty or enter a no-contest plea Thursday in a $14 million federal child nutrition fraud scandal.

Gandi Yusuf Mohamed was charged in 2024 after allegedly using two shell companies — GAK Properties LLC and GIF Properties LLC — to receive and launder more than $1.1 million in fraud proceeds while also submitting fraudulent meal counts and claims.

He was charged with conspiracy to commit wire fraud, wire fraud, conspiracy to commit money laundering, and money laundering.

This will make him the sixth family member or close associate to plead guilty. Several of them, including Mohamed, met privately with Attorney General Keith Ellison in 2021, during which participants pressed him for help to "get their funding flowing again" before the conversation turned to campaign donations.

Mohamed later sent a maxed-out campaign contribution of $2,500 to Ellison.

The AG returned the donation to the Department of Justice in 2025.

The Mohamed family was present at the now-infamous meeting with Ellison, during which the fraudsters discussed political support and donations. The AG could also be heard expressing willingness to help with their concerns about state agencies. Critics have called it exactly what it appears to be — a quid pro quo. Ellison maintains that he did not act inappropriately.

Oh, and as RedState's Bonchie previously reported, there are audio clips of the meeting. In them, Ellison offered help to people who would eventually be convicted in the Somali fraud scheme. He offered to help them push back against investigations into their activities, while the fraudsters offered "votes" and "dollars."

"The only way that we can protect what we have is by inserting ourselves into the political arena. Putting our votes where it needs to be. But most importantly, putting our dollars in the right place. And supporting candidates that will fight to protect our interests," one of the Somali family members says in the recording.

"That's right," Ellison replies.

Ellison, of course, continues to play innocent, stating in an April 2025 op-ed that he took the meeting in good faith and was unaware of the Somali family's nefarious plans.

"I took a meeting in good faith with people I didn’t know, and some turned out to have done bad things. I did nothing for them and took nothing from them," he wrote.

Shortly after that meeting, Mohamed gave his $2,500 donation to Ellison, which the AG would only return after the indictments were handed down.

After previously rejecting a plea deal, Mohamed — the final defendant from this family group — has now changed his mind. His brother, Suleman Mohamed, pleaded guilty last week to a wire fraud charge.

Other family members who pleaded guilty include sister Ikram Mohamed, mother Fadumo Yusuf, sister Aisha Hussein, Ikram’s husband Shakur Abdisalam, and Ikram’s friend Sahra Osman.
