The New UN IPCC Report has hit the streets. It is entitled Climate Change 2013: The Physical Science Basis. In the summary for Policy Makers, we read the following !SCIENCE!

Warming of the climate system is unequivocal, and since the 1950s, many of the observed changes are unprecedented over decades to millennia. The atmosphere and ocean have warmed, the amounts of snow and ice have diminished, sea level has risen, and the concentrations of greenhouse gases have increased…

Climate Scientologist Michael Mann wastes no time in taking to the Editorial Page of the UK Guardian to proclaim his victory over the iniquitous Deniers. Spiking the football long before any official could signal touchdown, he offers the following analysis.

The true take-home message of the latest IPCC report is crystal clear: climate change is real and caused by humans, and it continues unabated. We will see far more dangerous and potentially irreversible impacts in the decades ahead if we do not choose to reduce global carbon emissions. There has never been a greater urgency to act than there is now. The latest IPCC report is simply an exclamation mark on that already-clear conclusion.

The report goes further to predict dire changes in terrestrial climate that will make our blessed planet like the one in “Waterworld: The Hollywood Fiasco.” Temperatures could rise by as much as 9°F by 2100, sea levels could rise by 2ft 8ins.

And not everything that the UN IPCC publishes is quite as laughable as their infamous prediction that the Himalayan glaciers would all melt by 2035. The planet is 0.85°C warmer than 110 years ago. Greenhouse gases are a larger proportion of the atmosphere than they have been for the past 800,000 years. Simple experiments such as firing a laser set to a given wave-number through a chamber of CO2 gas will show the light from the laser being completely attenuated. This implies the energy carried by the photons of light has to go somewhere. Traditional thermodynamics would suggest at least some of that energy would dissipate as heat and warm the CO2 molecules hit by the laser.

However, the terrestrial atmosphere is much more complex than a jar of gas. In the past 15 years, the level of warming has slowed precipitously, while the man-made GHG emissions that the UN IPCC describes as the unequivocal cause of modern climate change are not being reduced in any meaningful way. If the UN IPCC truly understands the terrestrial climate, the Earth should be getting hotter faster. Recent data shows this is not arguably the case.

The track record of previous UN IPCC reports has been less than stellar. The 2007 report, (which printed the Himalayan Glacier claim straight out of an environmental advocacy group’s pamphlet as if it were refereed science) was so totally discredited that it came under fire from other scientific bodies. It’s problems went far beyond merely being empirically wrong.

Its previous report, in 2007, was so grotesquely flawed that the leading scientific body in the United States, the InterAcademy Council, decided that an investigation was warranted. The IAC duly reported in 2010, and concluded that there were “significant shortcomings in each major step of [the] IPCC’s assessment process”, and that “significant improvements” were needed. It also chastised the IPCC for claiming to have “high confidence in some statements for which there is little evidence”.

When two-thirds of the footnotes and citations of an environmental report are from Greenpeace and its allies, the study becomes about as believable as a safety report on open water drilling authored by British Petroleum. If this weren’t bad enough, the various governments who fund the scientific inquiry used to staff the UN IPCC reports get to edit the report before it goes to the media.

Since Monday, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has been in a meeting. The purpose of that meeting is to take a document authored by scientists and ensure that its wording is palatable to the powers that be. Called the Summary for Policymakers, this is a 30-page précis of the IPCC’s as-yet-unreleased Working Group 1 report (which is expected to total 1,000 or so pages). At the meeting, one sentence after another has been projected onto large screens. Diplomats, bureaucrats, and politicians from dozens of UN nations have haggled, horse traded, and negotiated. Eventually, phrasing that everyone can live with has been agreed upon. Then they’ve moved on to the next sentence.

In Dwight David Eisenhower’s Farewell Presidential Address, he warned of far more than just a military-industrial complex. He also condignly warned the American People of what would happen if the government came to dominate science. ”The prospect of domination of the nation’s scholars by Federal employment, project allocations, and the power of money is ever present – and is gravely to be regarded.” President Eisenhower rightfully declared. The UN IPCC report editing meetings are President Eisenhower’s nightmare sprang to life. In a sense, David Eisenhower predicted Global Warming. And in the aftermath of this man-made pollution of scientific inquiry by the politicians, activists and strap-hangers, the truth has melted far faster than any glacier sheet clinging to the Himalayas.
