The Sandy Show and The Tragedy of NYC

Does This Look Committed Enough?

To return to office a narcissistic amateur who seeks to ride this nation’s economy and international esteem to oblivion, like Slim Pickens riding the nuclear bomb to its target at the end of the movie “Dr. Strangelove,” would be disastrous.

While Barack Obama preens and acts committed to saving the victims of Sandy in the mode of a heroic Chief Executive, a deeply caring leader, there is another side to the entire Hurricane Sandy aftermath that isn’t hitting the air. Here hungry people dig through a dumpster for a meal. I’m guessing this won’t be on the screen during BHO’s Situation Room Photo-Ops.

Another way to look at this is to look at the results achieved by people working for a living instead of politicking. Big-Box retailers, often demonized by sermonizers anti-capitalists such as Mayor Bloomberg and President Obama, put their supply chains to the test with amazing results. The Wall Street Journal describes how capitalism saves storm victims below.

Shoppers lined up at some Home Depot Inc., HD +1.41%Wal-Mart Stores Inc. WMT -2.14% and Lowe’s Cos. LOW +1.76% stores on Wednesday, snagging necessities such as chain saws for clearing fallen trees and sump pumps to remove water or sewage from basements. Demand was particularly strong for generators, which can run as much as $1,500, from hundreds of thousands of people who are expected to remain without power through the weekend and perhaps longer….Home Depot stationed hundreds of trailer trucks filled with supplies along the storm’s path; Wal-Mart’s Sam’s Club warehouse club unit sent 7,000 generators into Northeast stores. Lowe’s said it asked some suppliers to bypass their warehouses and send items directly to stores instead.

Meanwhile, our benevolent and caring state that we just can’t survive without is doing things to prolong the misery of New Jerseysites. Non-union utility crews driving up from Decatur, Alabama to *volunteer* to help people have been told to go away. While New Yorkers sit in the dark, Mayor Bloomberg has made absolutely certain the media covering the NYC Marathon will have all the juice it needs.

Hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers huddle in the dark each night after the most devastating storm in city history — while two massive generators chug away in Central Park and a third sits idle waiting to power a media center during Sunday’s NYC Marathon. Like hell. Those generators could power 400 homes on Staten Island or the Rockaways or any storm-wracked neighborhood in the city certain to be suffering the after-effects of Hurricane Sandy on Sunday morning. Shouldn’t they come first? Shouldn’t the race just be canceled? Damned straight.

I remember when tornadoes killed people and smashed property all over Alabama. Just about everyone volunteered something – time, money, or what was left of their backs. When utility crews showed up with the trucks and chain saws, people cheered. They didn’t ask them for a freaking union card.

They weren’t diverting anything to run a sporting event. Members of Alabama’s vaunted Crimson Tide Football Varsity were out there clearing the crap. Coach Saban was a wise enough man to realize they had a pretty good excuse to miss out on running a few laps that day at practice.

I remember Hurricane Katrina becoming a damning indictment of President George W. Bush’s ability to perform his job in a national emergency. This hurricane is indictment of our societal morals and it starts at the top with President Photo-Shot and Mayor Marathon. In the tragic aftermath of Hurricane Katrina there was a certain twerp Junior Senator from Illinois whipping up as much partisan race-hatred as he possible could. He was asking people from New Orleans “Where’s your dollar?” Now I ask President Photo-Shot and Mayor Marathon. “Where are your priorities? Where is your soul?”
