Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R – Ky.) announced Tuesday that he is delaying the start of the Senate’s August recess.

“In order to provide more time to complete action on important legislative items and process nominees that have been stalled by a lack of cooperation from our friends across the aisle, the Senate will delay the start of the August recess until the third week of August.”

Delaying or canceling the August recess has been pushed for by many conservative senators who said the break shouldn’t be taken when there’s still work to do on important campaign promises Republicans were elected on, most importantly being health care.

The Senate’s health care bill has looked dead in the water to many in Congress and those on the sidelines. Republicans had hoped to bring the Senate version of the health care bill up for a vote before the July 4 break, but the votes haven’t been there.

Whether or not any progress is made toward passing the health care bill, which many argue is an imperative to the Republican plans for tax reform, during the weeks that will now be spent working remains to be seen.

If nothing else, it shows Republicans know breaking when important legislation is left unresolved, and with important issues like the debt limit coming up in September, is simply not minding the store, and worse, horrible optics.
