Jimmy Kimmel returned to late night Monday night after an extended absence following the birth of his son. William “Billy” John Kimmel was born on April 21 and thought to be healthy until a nurse noticed he had a heart murmur and wasn’t quite the right color. In the following hours, it was discovered the newborn was born with a congenital heart defect in which the pulmonary valve was completely blocked and a hole between the right and left sides of the heart.

Watch Kimmel’s emotional, yet at times humorous recounting his son’s traumatic first hours.
Kimmel was effusive in his thanks to the many medical staff, friends, and family who helped get him and his wife, Molly McNearney, through the ordeal. “We had atheists praying for us,” he said.Kimmel also took a moment to thank Congress for not slashing funding to the National Institute of Health and in the end providing it with $2 billion in additional funding. He went on to make an appeal to emotion over the issue of pre-existing conditions and insurance coverage, saying taking care of each other isn’t a Democratic or Republican value but an American one. It would seem he need not worry, President Trump assured us all he’s going to give us all the things, including preexisting conditions will be covered.
