Yes, Trump's Big Stupid Mouth Is a Real Problem

Let’s review the bidding. Trump has said so many crazy things in the last 24 hours, a writer doesn’t even know where to start.

There’s “take the guns first, go through due process second”:

“I like taking the guns early like in this crazy man’s case that just took place in Florida … to go to court would have taken a long time,” Trump said at a meeting with lawmakers on school safety and gun violence.

“Take the guns first, go through due process second,” Trump said.

As Charles C.W. Cooke says, that is a chilling call for lawbreaking:

If Obama had said it, every single person reading this post would have gone crazy. But many will shrug it off.

Then there’s Trump telling Pat Toomey he’s afraid of the NRA:

TRUMP: I was just curious as to what you did in your bill.
TOOMEY: We didn’t address it Mr. President.
TRUMP: You know why, because you’re afraid of the NRA.

Then there’s Trump telling DiFi that she should insert some of her own stuff in the bill. Watch how happy she is when Trump says “Dianne, if you can add what you have also, and I think you can, into the bill” and says he’ll help her.

What Dianne “has” is yummy yummy “assault-weapon” grabbing, with the ultimate goal being confiscation of all semi-automatic firearms.

This stuff makes his insane ranting about his own Attorney General on Twitter (“DISGRACEFUL!”) or in private (“Mr. Magoo”) seem almost reassuring.

Are these the positions you espouse?

Some will no doubt find ways to dispute the clear record of the nonsense he said; or shrug this off; or give lip service to the notion that, OK, maybe this is bad, but let’s still defend the man on this or that ground.

I’m not playing. Let’s call a spade a spade: the problem here is a President who betrayed the Second Amendment yesterday with his every spoken thought.

This stuff makes a difference, because it’s going to affect the way legislation is written.

It’s time to stand up and let him know you don’t agree.
