Spanish PM Throws an Incredibly Ironic Tantrum About the EU Reaction to Ceuta Invasion

There was an incredible invasion of illegal aliens, mostly young men, rushing the borders into the Spanish territories of Ceuta and Melilla over the past week, with some 60,000 estimated to have entered and 67 dying in the process.

Spain has now claimed that most of the people have been returned to Morocco.

However, in response, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said she would be temporarily suspending Schengen Area free-travel arrangements because she didn't want the influx to affect Italy. “The images arriving from Ceuta have once again demonstrated how urgent it was for Europe to respond to illegal immigration," she said. She further explained how Italy and Democrat has signed onto a letter with 22 EU states which called for joint action to strengthen external borders, combat illegal immigration, and "eliminate any factor that could incentivize new illegal entries."

That ticked off Spain's socialist prime minister, Pedro Sanchez.

“In the current international context, the European Union cannot afford this kind of selfish, polarising and unlawful reaction,” Sánchez said in a letter obtained by the Agence France-Presse (AFP) newswire.

He chastised those who "have chosen to attack Spain and to call for its temporary exclusion from the Schengen Area."

Such an attitude — driven by prejudice, fake news, ignorance, or political interest — is not only contrary to European law, humanitarian law, and the principles of solidarity that bind us together,” he reportedly wrote.

Imagine the incredible irony and presumption of this guy talking about the law. Where's his care for the rest of the EU when he employs actions that encourage illegal immigration?

As my colleague Ward Clark reported, Spain this year, through what they termed "regularization," granted legal residency to both legal and illegal foreign nationals who fit certain parameters. Think amnesty, legalization. But it, along with other actions, was sending up a big signal to those considering entering illegally.

Then, too, not stopping them as they flood in over the borders tends to be a problem as well.

Dolors Montserrat, Secretary General of the European People's Party, warned about what Spain's actions, like regularization, had done.

Ceuta is paying the price for the Spanish Government’s massive regularisation, the failure to enforce EU return rules and its repeated delays in implementing the Migration Pact.

Spain did exactly what Meloni was warning about, waving a flag, taking action that could "incentivize" illegal entries.

When you throw out a welcome mat, people are likely to come.

Sanchez wants to gripe about Meloni's response? Who's really holding up the law and the "things that bind us together"? Hint: it isn't Sanchez.
