TX Dems Cave and Return - They're Not Happy About What Happened Next

It was official on Monday as the runaway Texas Democrats who fled to break quorum finally caved and returned to the Texas Capitol.

You can see them coming in, including Texas state representative Gene Wu.

According to the local report, they had a quorum, although there are at least two Democrats who had not yet returned.

Here's one of the Democrats who returned, Chris Turner, who claimed they returned "victorious" because they've started a "conversation" and California Democrats might pass maps that would help Democrats.

Um, no. The maps will pass in Texas, and you lost. You threw a tantrum that just drew attention to how Democrats have been gerrymandering for years and are completely hypocritical. And if you think California will save you, it remains to be seen if the Democrats' effort there will even pass. But notice the Texas Democrats still wouldn't accept that "democracy" — Turner is saying they will try to challenge the Texas maps in court, if they pass.

Here's a similar statement from another representative, John Bucy. He was one of the Democrats who didn't return. He said he was trying to help California Democrats pass their maps, but that he would return if a vote happened in Texas.

It's funny that they just can't admit to losing. This is all posturing to make themselves sound less ridiculous to their constituents.

Speaker Dustin Burrows, a Republican, had some statements on the controversy.

He said they had some business for the day, but that those who had not been present previously and had arrest warrants issued would only be allowed to leave if they were released into the custody of a Texas Department of Public Safety officer to ensure that they would return on Wednesday. Those who had arrest warrants who had not returned — those arrest warrants would remain in force.

One representative refused to agree to be accompanied by a DPS officer. So she was still locked in the chamber. The others were having fits, complaining about the officers. Such tantrums — they're lucky they were let go, even with an officer.

Then maybe don't throw tantrums and run away? Just a thought.

Rep. Nicole Collier, the one in the chamber, said, “In my heart, I don’t feel compelled to sign it.” When asked what her plan was, she replied, “I’ll just sit here, I don’t know… I guess I’ll wait til Wednesday.”

If the others are in custody of the DPS, that will hopefully ensure that they return.

They were being fined, and it's not clear yet what other punishment they may face.
