Deadspin Story Implodes Even More, as Writer Deletes Tweet and More Video Comes Out

The story of the Deadspin effort to attack a little child for having his face painted at a Kansas City Chiefs game just keeps imploding.

Deadspin claimed the child was racist for wearing blackface and a native headdress. Then when the truth came out that his face was painted with colors the team has used in logos and merchandising, the writer claimed in a post on X that black and red was worse because somehow the child was being racist twice. And it turned out the Deadspin writer behind all this had his issues with problematic tweets in the past. Elon Musk even got involved, calling out the Deadspin writer and touting the benefit of the Community Note that pointed out the truth that he was in black and red. Native Americans joined in as well, blasting the attack on the boy.

My colleague Brad Slager blasted Deadspin for going after a child. Why would anyone think that was the right thing to do? Not only attacking him but calling on the NFL to do something about this. Slager also pointed out that the claim the child was somehow racist against Native Americans fell apart because the child is Native American, whose family comes from the Chumash, with his grandfather on a governing board.

But the story just keeps imploding. Now that the Deadspin writer behind this all, Carron Phillips (or as Brad noted, "Karen"), has now deleted the tweet where he accused the child of double racism and anyone chastising him over this issue of somehow being racist.

As journalist Julio Rosas noted, Phillip'’s post got a huge ratio, and people aren't going to forget it. So the writer can't run and hide just by deleting it and pretending he didn't say it. Some might think well, maybe he had some scruples, and maybe he deleted it once he found out he was incredibly wrong, but his story is still up at Deadspin at this moment, so I think that's a no.

However, that wasn't all. Remember the original claim was that the kid was racist because he was wearing blackface. They showed his face from a deceptive angle and didn't reveal he was in red and black. But now there's more video. Had Deadspin spent an ounce of time looking into this "story" they might have found this out which also wouldn't have helped their claims.

The players saw the little boy doing the chop and were following him, including the black players. They knew he wasn't in blackface.

So one more thing to blow up the Deadspin claim.
