Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) became known for his ridiculous whiteboard examination of Supreme Court nominees like Brett Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett, with his obsession to find anything, no matter how crazy or conspiratorial, to try to ding them with. With Kavanaugh, for example, Whitehouse seemed obsessed with teenaged boys’ terms for flatulence and drinking games. He also promoted a false rape claim someone from Rhode Island made against Kavanaugh.
In a word, he showed he was a pretty slimy human being without a lot of principles.
Turns out that doesn’t only apply to politics.
Whitehouse belongs to the all-white Bailey’s Beach Club in Newport, according to GoLocalProv.
Apparently, the issue had been raised with him in 2017, four years ago. Now, people put it to him again this weekend.
His response? “I think the people who are running the place are still working on that, and I’m sorry it hasn’t happened yet.” Oh, my. What a lame answer. Either you are supportive of it and you stay, you change it, or you leave. You don’t say, “Well, sorry, no one’s done anything about such a despicable policy and oh, well.”
It gets worse. His family has belonged to the club for decades, and his wife is now one of the largest shareholders in the club. So, his family aren’t just members, but shareholders. So, they have some responsibility for what’s being done.
How does he explain himself when questioned on this, especially since he claims to care about “systemic racism?” He is asked, “Should these clubs continue to exist?”
“It’s a long tradition in Rhode Island, and there are many of them, and I think we just need to work our way through the issues, thank you,” said Whitehouse.
What are the “issues” to working out with such an abhorrent “long tradition”? If this is true, you belong to a restrictive, racist club. You’ve known about it being an issue for years. Your wife is even a shareholder. Yet, you’ve done absolutely nothing, and you’re still a member. And you’re a hypocrite on top of it all.
The club is apparently one of the most exclusive in the country.
Looks like a New York Times reporter may now be onto the story, too. Can we hope that Sheldon might finally be held to account?
Here is how one lifelong member of Bailey’s Beach Club described its membership back in 2003:

In 2006, during SHELDON WHITEHOUSE’s first successful campaign for Senate, he reportedly promised to end his membership in the all-white Bailey’s Beach Club in Newport, Rhode Island.
Instead, he consolidated his ownership with his wife & remained a memberhttps://t.co/ys8G7CsR6O

Can we break out the whiteboard and explain to Sheldon why this is bad? Because he hasn’t seemed to figure it out yet on his own.
