New York Democratic Governor Andrew Cuomo is throwing a bit of a wrench into the talking points by Democrats against President Donald Trump.
One of the continuing attacks both House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Joe Biden, the Democrats’ presumptive nominee for president, have been slinging is that Trump hasn’t invoked the Defense Production Act (DPA) and/or that he hasn’t been using it effectively.
Of course, Trump actually did formally invoke it by executive order on March 18, but neither Biden nor Pelosi seem to have caught up to that fact, at least not as of last week.
He was using it, for example, to try to push folks like 3M to make masks faster to make sure that the demand for them was met.
According to Governor Cuomo, he said during a press conference on Friday that Trump is using the DPA effectively.
“Federal government has something called the Defense Production Act, DPA they call it, which I’ve been saying from day one is a very powerful tool for the federal government to use when they need to secure a product in the defense of this nation,” Cuomo said. “This is in the defense of this nation. The federal government has used it effectively. They’ve used it in this situation more as a point of leverage than anything else. Basically saying to a company, ‘We need you to do this. We do have the Defense Production Act that we could use.’”
Not only that, he shut down another talking point, he also said it was right to be questioning the World Health Organization’s response. Some on the left and in media seem to have been carrying water for the WHO, which, in turn, is carrying water for China. We reported, for example, how former Obama official Samantha Power chastised Trump for daring to call out WHO’s actions and saying that their funding needed to be reexamined.
Here’s what Cuomo said:
“A question that I’ve had from day one and when you look back at this, where were the horns that should have been triggered back in December and January?” Cuomo asked. “Where were the warning signs? Who was supposed to blow the whistle? The president has asked this question, and I think he’s right.”
“The president, his answer is the World Health Organization should have been blowing the whistle,” Cuomo continued. “I don’t know enough to know if that’s right or wrong, but I know the question is right, and sometimes the question is more important than the answer. How did this happen? I mean, I still want to know how this happened because the warning signs were there, and if you don’t know the answer, then how do you know it’s not going to happen again? Right? Fool me once.”
WHO put out falsehoods that deceived the world into thinking that the virus wasn’t communicable and that cutting travel wasn’t necessary when they had evidence to know better. If you’re not calling that out and trying to correct it, Cuomo is exactly right, you’re going to get it again. But other Democrats are so invested in attacking Trump, that critical point and the protection of Americans isn’t what is uppermost in their minds when it should be. Shameful.
