Joe Biden has been placing his bets on winning South Carolina on Saturday in order to stop Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) march to the nomination.
Biden did not do well in Iowa or New Hampshire and came in second in far distant second behind Sanders in Nevada, with Bernie having more than twice his number, 46.8 percent to 20.2 percent.
Bernie is stacking up the delegates already and Biden needs a big and decisive win if he’s to have any hope of being one the “anti-Bernie” folks coalesce around in a very limited time before Super Tuesday on March 3.
But it’s not looking that great in a new NBC News/Marist poll, according to Politico.
According to the poll, it’s much tighter than one would want, with Biden at 27 percent and Sanders within the margin of error at 23. That’s hardly looking big or decisive, especially in comparison to Sanders’ blow-out win in Nevada. The poll was taken before Sanders win, so that news might even make the race tighter.
Tom Steyer, the self-funding billionaire who has been campaigning heavily in the state, placed third at 15 percent. No other candidate made it to double digits, with Pete Buttigieg at 9 percent, Elizabeth Warren at 8 percent and Amy Klobuchar at 5 percent.
Not only is it not looking like the firewall Biden had claimed, but even CNN is mocking him for saying he never said it was a firewall when clearly he did.

CNN runs a clip with Face the Nation’s Margaret Brennan confronting him over saying it. Biden gets that prickly voice reaction thing he has going on, immediately getting defensive and claims, “You said it was. I never said it was a firewall, I said I was going to do well,” he claims. Then CNN runs the clip of him telling an MSNBC reporter on February 2, “I think I have a real firewall in South Carolina.” Then everyone on the panel breaks into adject laughter at Biden.
