Looks like the wheel has come around on actor Jussie Smollett again.
In the wake of the scandal of the dismissal of charges against Smollett last year, a special prosecutor was appointed to investigate both Smollett’s actions as well as the actions of Kim Foxx and the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office.
Now, the special prosecutor Dan Webb has indicted Smollett on six counts of disorder conduct for filing four false reports with the Chicago police “related to his false claims that he was the victim of a hate crime, knowing he was not the victim of a crime.”
Smollett had initially alleged that he was attacked by two masked people who shouted “This is MAGA country,” yelling other racial and homophobic slurs in downtown Chicago at 2 a.m., threw bleach on him and put a noose around his neck.
Police later said that Smollett had orchestrated a hoax with two brothers, and charged with him with multiple counts. The two brothers told all to the police after they were grilled.
But then Kim Foxx arranged to have the charges dismissed in exchange for a forfeiture of his $10,000 bond, which caused a national uproar.
While Webb has decided to re-indict Smollett, he has not yet made any conclusions about wrongdoing by the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office.
Webb said his investigation was into whether Smollett should be further prosecuted for alleged false police reports, and whether any person or office involved in the investigation engaged in any wrongdoing, including the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office.
Webb said he has not yet reached any conclusions as to the second part of the investigation, and that his investigation into whether any person or office involved in the investigation engaged in wrongdoing is ongoing.
Smollett is supposed to turn himself into the police on Feb. 24.
