If Pelosi or Dems Want to Call Bolton, They're Not Going to Like McConnell's Response

Senate Majority Leader Mitch Mcconnell (R-KY) has a message for House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA).

If Democrats want to play games about witnesses, it’s not going to end well for them.

McConnell won the initial battle of the witnesses, basically forcing Pelosi to give up sitting on the articles and look silly for having done so. The Senate seems resolved now not to vote on the question of witnesses until after the presentation of the impeachment case by the House Democratic managers and then have the response by the president, then the senators get to submit written questions. This is basically sticking to the rules that are currently in place and was how the Clinton impeachment was handled. McConnell has said that all 53 Republican senators support this proposition.

But Pelosi said that she was not excluding calling former national security adviser John Bolton before the House, despite the fact that House Democrats have already taken a vote on impeachment and her claiming they already have enough evidence.

McConnell’s response? You really don’t want to play this game. Because if you want witnesses, we’re not going to rule out calling people like Hunter Biden.

From The Hill:

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) says Republicans could subpoena Hunter Biden to testify about his business dealings with a Ukrainian gas company if Democrats insist on having witnesses such as former national security adviser John Bolton testify at the Senate impeachment trial.

“We’ll be dealing with the witness issue at the appropriate time into the trial, and I think it’s certainly appropriate to point out that both sides would want to call witnesses that they wanted to hear from,” McConnell told reporters Tuesday when asked about GOP senators who want Hunter Biden, former Vice President Joe Biden’s son, to testify.

“When you get to that issue, I can’t imagine that only the witnesses that our Democratic colleagues would want to call would be called,” he said.

Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) said that he would force a vote to have Biden if the Democrats wanted to call Bolton or other senior administration officials.

“My colleagues can’t have it both ways. Calling for some, while blocking others. If we are going to give a platform to witnesses the Dems demand, I look forward to forcing votes to call Hunter Biden and many more!” Paul tweeted.

Pass the popcorn, looks like it might be lit if they go that route.
