Big news broke about Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) as my colleague Bonchie reported yesterday, when the House Ethics Committee announced they would be expanding their investigation into Rashida Tlaib for possible campaign violations for allegedly converting campaign money to herself for personal use. But now there’s even more.

The Committee expanded their probe based upon the referral Office of Congressional Ethics who referred the matter to the House Ethics Committee said in its referral that “there is substantial reason to believe that Rep. Tlaib converted campaign funds from Rashida Tlaib for Congress to personal use or Rep. Tlaib’s campaign committee expended funds that were not attributable to bona fide campaign or political purposes.”

All five members of the board of the OCE voted to continue the probe into Tlaib.

While candidates are permitted to receive salaries during their campaigns in accordance with the salary they’d received in the year prior to the election year, they are only allowed to receive funds up until the election.

At least one problem in question is that she received payments after the election.

OCE released emails, campaign spreadsheets, and paycheck stubs that show Tlaib was paid after Election Day.

Tlaib received $45,500.00 between May 7, 2018, and Dec. 1, 2018. The two potentially problematic payments were made Nov. 16, 2018, for $2,000, and $15,500 on Dec. 1, 2018.

That last one particularly appears problematic since it was so much more and far after the end of the campaign.

And the OCE noted the following on the checks, that the November 16, 2018 check includes in the bottom left-hand corner “Salary (11/1 – 11/15)” and the December 1, 2018 check includes a notation with the dates “11/16 – 12/31.”

The OCE have an email from her campaign treasurer confirms the second check was covering the time period after the campaign.

Another email suggested that while part of the work might pertain to work done before the election, about $7500 was for an unspecified “adjustment.”

But another problem is that she and her staff have refused to cooperate with the request for documents, according to the OCE.

The report stated that Tlaib, campaign treasurer Soh Suzuki, campaign manager Andy Goddeeris and campaign staffer Amanda Kaye refused to provide documents to the committee for the investigation.

“Because Rep. Tlaib refused to interview with the OCE, the OCE could not address these potentially problematic payments with her. Likewise, the OCE was unable to address these documents with members of her campaign staff given their refusals to interview with the OCE,” the report stated.

Accordingly, the OCE recommended that Tlaib and the three staffers all be subpoenaed to provide the documents requested and be interviewed about what had occurred.

This is especially ironic as Tlaib is infamous for attacking President Donald Trump, calling on an audience at a political event to “impeach the mother**cker” when she’s the one who apparently had problematic campaign issues and is refusing to cooperate.
