President Donald Trump has broken Democrats and Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) showed by just how much during an event she was holding with supporters on Tuesday.
Tlaib was caught on video revealing that Democrats have been discussing how and whether to arrest Trump officials for not complying with subpoenas.
From Free Beacon:
Tlaib told Detroit constituents at her “Congress, Coffee, and Conversation” event on Tuesday that lawmakers are focused on how best to take cabinet members into custody. “This is the first time we’ve ever had a situation like this,” she said. “So they’re trying to figure out, no joke, is it the D.C. police that goes and gets them? We don’t know. Where do we hold them?” ….
Tlaib said her colleagues are “trying to tread carefully” in this “uncharted territory.”
“I will tell them they can hold all those people right here in Detroit,” she joked. “We’ll take care of them and make sure they show up to the committee hearings.”
It’s not clear who specifically she is talking about arresting, although Democrats have had contempt votes against people such as Attorney General William Barr and Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross.
First, it wouldn’t be the D.C. police, it would be the Capitol Police.
But secondly, not responding to a subpoena isn’t “uncharted territory.” The Obama administration made it practically a cottage industry to avoid Congressional requests for information when they were embroiled in the many scandals – Benghazi, the IRS, Hillary Clinton, spying on Congress.
Indeed, former Attorney General Eric Holder, who described himself both as Obama’s “wingman” and his “boy,” was held in contempt for failing to turn over documents that were under subpoena in the Fast and Furious fiasco. The GOP didn’t arrest him. That was a real scandal not the manufactured angst they had against Ross and Barr over the unreacted Mueller report and the citizenship question on the census, respectively.
Holder withheld information about the Obama administration involvement in shipping about 2000 guns to Mexico that were then used to kill hundreds of Mexicans and at least one American law enforcement officer, CBP agent Brian Terry. Small difference.
One of the Obama administration weapons was even found when the U.S. ultimately nailed “El Chapo” in 2016.
From National Review:
Now, Fast and Furious is back in the news. Earlier this month, a raid on the hidey-hole of drug kingpin Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman recovered not only the notorious drug lord, but a (“massive”) .50-caliber rifle, capable of stopping a car or shooting down a helicopter, that originated with the ATF program. Rest easy, though: Only 34 such rifles were sold through the program.
The news comes just days after a federal judge rejected President Obama’s assertion of executive privilege to deny Congress access to Fast and Furious–related records it requested back in 2012 as part of an investigation into the gun-walking operation. Despite the IRS scandal, Benghazi, and a host of other accusations of malfeasance against this White House, it remains this president’s sole assertion of executive privilege.
Yet Republicans didn’t arrest Holder. And that scandal, like the many many scandals of the Obama administration, went down the memory hole when the administration refused to comply.
On the other hand, the DOJ has found there was nothing criminal with Ross or Barr refusing to comply with Democrats’ political witch hunt game.
From Politico:
In a letter to Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Wednesday, Deputy Attorney General Jeffrey Rosen said the Cabinet officials’ defiance of congressional subpoenas seeking information about the 2020 census “did not constitute a crime.”
“[A]ccordingly the department will not bring the congressional contempt citations before a grand jury or take any other action to prosecute the attorney general or the secretary,” Rosen wrote, citing legal precedents from administration of both parties.
But imagine, this is where Democrats are at right now. They literally want to arrest their opponents. Can we say coup, people? And they say Trump is a “threat to democracy” or norms? They are ripping up norms right and left while ignoring their own hypocrisy in the process.
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who was on the Trump-Ukraine call, has said he will not testify and countenance the improper impeachment effort, calling it an “attempt to intimidate, bully, and treat improperly the distinguished professionals of the Department of State,” according to Free Beacon. And because the Democrats have not brought the question of an impeachment inquiry to a formal vote of the full floor, GOP are contesting their ability to subpoena and proceed without a proper vote.
The Trump administration is not likely to fold over any time soon for the Democrats who are desperate to tag Trump with something as the election inches ever closer and their prospects, given their candidates, are deeply questionable.
