Looks like former CIA Director John Brennan sounds pretty worried about the Department of Justice’s investigation into the origins of the Russia probe.

Brennan appeared on MSNBC with Nicole Wallace on Wednesday night. Both Brennan and Wallace inveighed against President Donald Trump and Attorney General William Barr, upset that they dared to question and investigate what had been done during the Obama administration. They were especially upset with Barr going abroad to look into what had been done with our foreign allies. Which makes one think that Barr must be over the target.

Wallace asked Brennan if he knew why Barr would be going overseas.

“I don’t,” Brennan said. “And I’m supposedly going to be interviewed by Mr. Durham as part of this non-investigation.” U.S. Attorney John Durham is the person heading up the investigation into the Russia probe. Sounds like great news that he’s going to hold Brennan’s feet to the fire.

Brennan’s response was to take a shot at Barr and try to discredit his effort. “I remember William Barr when he was testifying in front of Congress, he said he didn’t understand the predication of the counterintelligence investigation that was launched into Russian interference in 2016. I don’t understand the predication of this worldwide effort to try to uncover dirt, real or imagined, that would discredit that investigation in 2016 into Russian interference.”

Brennan then went completely over the slide into another smear against Trump, stoking the disproven Trump/Russia collusion narrative again. “He knows Russia interfered on his behalf. And as he sees his political fortunes dwindling, I think he really is hoping his pal Vladimir is going to come through once again and help him get elected in 2020 if he’s going to be in office then.”

Is there any wonder that, given Brennan’s significant anti-Trump bias, there’s a concern about what was done during 2016? He doesn’t seem to be able to control himself publicly which makes one wonder what was going on behind the scenes. And he sounds very concerned about being interviewed by Durham.

He claimed earlier in the year to MSNBC that they don’t spy against domestic individuals.

With Barr sending a shock wave through Washington by asserting “spying did occur” against the Trump campaign, Brennan went on the defensive. “Does the CIA spy? Yes,” he told MSNBC earlier this year. “Do we spy against our foreign adversaries? Yes. Do we spy against domestic individuals? No, we do not. We work very closely with the FBI. And when the Russians were trying to interfere in that election and to change the outcome of it in their favor, the CIA and the FBI worked very collaboratively to see what the Russians were doing and who they were working with.”

But of course, that was already shown to be false during the Obama administration when the C.I.A was caught spying on Congress in 2014. People seem to completely forget what was done under Brennan. That story seems to have gone down the memory hole. This was not someone’s opinion, he was caught dead to rights, lied about it and Democrats in Congress, who were spied on, were furious, as the Atlantic notes.

Last March, Senator Dianne Feinstein accused the CIA of spying on the Senate intelligence committee as it labored to finalize its report on the torture of prisoners. “I have grave concerns that the CIA’s search may well have violated the separation of powers principles embodied in the United States Constitution,” she said. “I have asked for an apology and a recognition that this CIA search of computers used by its oversight committee was inappropriate. I have received neither.”

CIA Director John Brennan denied the charge. “Nothing could be further from the truth,” he said. “We wouldn’t do that. That’s just beyond the scope of reason in terms of what we’d do.” It would be months before his denial was publicly proved false. “An internal investigation by the C.I.A. has found that its officers penetrated a computer network used by the Senate Intelligence Committee in preparing its damning report on the C.I.A.’s detention and interrogation program,” The New York Times reported. “The report by the agency’s inspector general also found that C.I.A. officers read the emails of the Senate investigators and sent a criminal referral to the Justice Department based on false information.”

Yet nothing was done, Brennan got a pat on the head from the Obama administration and continued on in his job.

Former Chair of the House Intelligence Committee, Trey Gowdy, has indicated that Brennan may have some legitimate reason for concern about his own actions, according to the Washington Examiner.

Republicans believe the impending declassification of Russia investigation documents will show an email exchange between Brennan and former FBI Director James Comey discussing the use of British ex-spy Christopher Steele’s unverified dossier in the U.S. intelligence community’s assessment on Russian interference in the 2016 election. Former South Carolina Rep. Trey Gowdy, who claims to have seen the classified material, said this puts Brennan in jeopardy more than it does Comey.

There have been reports, including by veteran journalist Bob Woodward, that the dossier was included in an early draft of the assessment. Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., said in March he was told Brennan “insisted” the dossier be included in the report. “BREAKING: A high-level source tells me it was Brennan who insisted that the unverified and fake Steele dossier be included in the Intelligence Report … Brennan should be asked to testify under oath in Congress ASAP,” Paul tweeted.
