Alternative title: Andrew Cuomo decides to forgo 2016 Presidential election:
…Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo is putting the finishing touches on legislation that would guarantee women in New York the right to late-term abortions when their health is in danger or the fetus is not viable.
Mr. Cuomo, seeking to deliver on a promise he made in his recent State of the State address, would rewrite a law that currently allows abortions after 24 weeks of pregnancy only if the pregnant woman’s life is at risk.
[snip of pro-abortion spin]
Mr. Cuomo’s proposal, which has not yet been made public, would also clarify that licensed health care practitioners, and not only physicians, can perform abortions.
Yes, yes, I’m no doubt about to be told that no Catholic Democrat ever has to worry about publicly breaking one of the cardinal rules of his or her religion. To which I reply: we’ve only elected one Catholic President, too – and well before abortion became an issue in American politics. And while Joe Biden may have been able to skate on the whole issue while running for Vice President, that’s a qualitatively different situation than one where Biden (or Cuomo) is running for President. Finally: while I of course respect the apparent tradition among the American Right that nothing ever, ever breaks our way; I, alas, do not follow it. Sometimes the bridge really is too far for the Left to cross, which is why Dennis Kuchinich is not President of the United States of America.
Besides: not to be slightly low-rent about it, but Andrew Cuomo’s currently shacking up with a live-in girlfriend. That alone is going to sink him.
