In this episode of “The Most Trusted Name in News,” Washington Post media critic Erik Wemple was a guest on CNN’s “Reliable Sources” on Sunday, as part of a panel discussion on media coverage in general of New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s ever-worsening nursing home and sexual allegations scandals. And then it happened. The elephant in the room.

When host Brian Stelter asked Wemple for his take, Wemple gave it to him in no uncertain terms — much to the chagrin of Mr. Potato Head. “I would be remiss, Brian,” he began.
“I would be remiss, Brian, if I didn’t mention CNN’s own huge media story here with Chris Cuomo, the anchor at the nine-o’clock hour, who covered Andrew Cuomo and had all these wonderful love-a-thon interviews with him — more than ten of them.
“They suspended the conflict of interest rule for Chris Cuomo for those interviews, yet all of a sudden they’ve enforced it again now that Andrew Cuomo is in the midst of a historic scandal in the Albany State House.
“That is a major black eye for CNN,” Wemple emphasized. No word if Stelter wet his pants.
And the second-best part? The looks on the faces of Stelter and the other three panelists as Wemple burned Chris Cuomo and “The Most Trusted Name in News” to the ground.

As noted by Fox News, the on-air brotherly lovefest came to a sudden halt when Fredo announced he would refrain from covering the sexual assault allegations surrounding his brother — “a change of tune from the months of glowing coverage he offered the governor.”
And who could forget Pulitzer Prize-worthy interviews like Fredo’s critically-acclaimed, hard-hitting “Q-tip interview” with the Luv Guv? Walter Cronkite would no doubt be proud.
Really? Why did he have that hard hitting Q-tip routine with him then? pic.twitter.com/1qF919imKH

Here’s a longer clip with Stelter’s response to Wemple. Spoiler: Tater deflected by blaming the embattled New York governor for now refusing CNN’s “repeated” requests for interviews, rather than specifically respond to Wemple’s blowtorch.
.@ErikWemple, during an appearance on CNN’s Reliable Sources, calls out CNN for allowing the Cuomo-Cuomo “love-a-thon” interviews last year but suspending them now that the governor is in the midst of a scandal:

Gotta love it. Smug, hypocritical Chris Cuomo getting burned to the ground, on-air — on his own equally-smug network. Jake Tapper was unavailable for comment.
