According to published reports, at least thirteen members of presumptive Democrat presidential nominee Joe Biden’s campaign staff have made donations to a group that helps pay cash bail for Minnesota “protesters” — and bragged about doing so on Twitter.

The group, whose website is Minnesota Freedom Fund, is opposed to arrestees being forced to pay cash bail in order to avoid being held in jail prior to trial. The group’s website front page reads, in part:

SUPPORT BLACK YOUTH LED MOVEMENTS RIGHT NOW #GeorgeFloyd

We are in awe of the support coming through right now.

We are working with National Lawyers Guild and Legal Rights Center to help bails that are set.

Love now, peace later.

“Love now, peace later”? Interesting way to put it. That is, unless by “Love now,” they mean rioting, looting, burning buildings, torching police cars, and putting people’s lives at risk on a nightly basis.

The group’s position on cash bail — and presumably that of the Biden staffers — is explained under the heading, “Why Pay For Bail For People Who Can’t Afford It? Shouldn’t People Stay In Jail?”

There is nothing “normal” about cash bail – the United States and the Philippines are the only two countries in the world where someone has to put up cash to avoid being imprisoned before their trial.

We stand against cash bail as unjust and identify wealth-based discrimination as a vehicle for the criminal justice system to target populations for structural violence.

People of color and immigrants face higher rates of arrest, harsher sentencing, and disparities in the setting of bail compared to white citizens.

Fox News reported on Saturday night that Biden’s campaign refused to comment on whether the staffers’ donations were made with the blessing of — or in coordination with — the campaign.

However, campaign spokesman Andrew Bates told Reuters that Biden himself opposes cash bail, which he reportedly compares to a “modern day debtors prison.”

So why the crickets from the campaign regarding the staffers’ donations? Given that Biden is opposed to cash bail to avoid pre-trial imprisonment, is it not reasonable to assume that he would support such donations by his staffers, let alone his campaign?

Reuters also reported that Team Trump found the reports of the donations “disturbing.”

President Donald Trump’s re-election campaign on Saturday said it was “disturbing” that Biden’s team “would financially support the mayhem that is hurting innocent people and destroying what good people spent their lives building,” in an email about the Reuters story that called for Biden to condemn the riots.

We’ve all heard the old idiom, “put your money where you mouth is.”

In this case, the Biden campaign should put its mouth where its staffers’ money is — and reveal whether or not Biden himself supports paying the bail of rioters who indiscriminately burn buildings, strip stores bare, torch police cars, and put lives at risk on a nightly basis.
