This is hilarious. 13 hours after the press got ahold of Trump’s FEC report for May and savaged his pathetic fundraising totals, well after #TrumpsoPoor began trending on Twitter and the narrative of Trump as a terrible fundraiser set in, Trump’s crack campaign operation has decided to start spinning the report.
Here is the statement, released at 11:05am this morning:
TRUMP CAMPAIGN STATEMENT ON FEC FILING FOR MAY 2016
The month of June represents the first full month of fundraising activity for the campaign and this will be reflected in the June FEC report. The campaign held its first campaign fundraising event on May 25th, 2016. To date, the campaign’s fundraising has been incredible and we continue to see a tremendous outpouring of support for Mr. Trump and money to the Republican Party. The positive response to our fundraising efforts so far is a further indication that the country does not want yet another corrupt politician like Crooked Hillary.
Mr. Trump added, “If need be, there could be unlimited “cash on hand” as I would put up my own money, as I have already done through the primaries, spending over $50 million dollars. Our campaign is leaner and more efficient, like our government should be.”
Let’s unpack this a bit.
First, the primaries effectively ended May 3rd when Cruz and Kasich closed up shop. We are supposed to believe that Trump did not begin fundraising operations until May 25th? If so, is that supposed to make us feel better? Or worse?
Second, Ted Cruz had three fundraising days in May, during which he pulled in $2.6M. According to Trump’s BS story, even with the help of the RNC, he was able to raise $3.1M.. in seven days.
Third, this explanation does not pass the eyeball test. If you look at the itemized list of receipts from the actual FEC report, the vast, vast majority of donations in May came before May 25th. At a glance, it appears that about 25% of the money Trump raised in May came after the magic May 25th date, so it’s absolutely false to suggest that they did nothing from May 1st-24th, then suddenly picked up the pace. It’s been the same crappy pace the whole month of May.
Fourth, Hillary was still involved in her primary for the whole month of May – why was she able to raise $26M to your $3M?
As Erick points out, Donald Trump’s campaign just sent out its first email solicitation today. The reason Trump’s campaign hasn’t raised any money isn’t because Trump decided to flip a magic switch on May 25th – it’s because a) he and his campaign are bad at this and b) people do not want to donate money to Trump.
