Ted Cruz just held a press conference, and in it, he was asked about Donald Trump’s borderline insane twitter tirade today. His answer was pretty spot on, and gets to the heart of the problem I have with the idea of even casting a vote for Trump in the general. Take a look:

Reporter: This line of attack, though, he’s calling you a cheater, he’s calling you a fraud. Does this cross the line for you?

Cruz [laughing]: Listen, Donald’s insults get more and more hysterical the more and more upset he gets. And that’s fine, he can do that, but I’m not going to respond in kind.

Reporter: Do you think they’re funny?

Cruz: I think they’re hyster… I think they’re very funny. I think Donald… I wake up every day and laugh at the latest thing Donald has tweeted, because he’s losing it. Look, we need a commander in chief, not a twitterer in chief. We need someone with judgment and temperament to keep this country safe. I don’t know anyone who would be comfortable with someone who behaves this way having his finger on the button. I mean, we’re liable to wake up one morning and Donald, if he were President, would have nuked Denmark. That’s not the temperament of a leader to keep this country safe.

This is exactly the main problem I have with the idea of a Trump candidacy from day one. It’s not that he’s a closet liberal (although he is) or a serial flip flopper (although he is). The problem is that having a person with his temperament in control of the United States military is going to get us all killed, not to mention a whole lot of other people throughout the world. Cruz is right on, except for the part about Trump being funny.
