I’ve read roughly one billion Internet comments and articles from people who say that Rubio’s work on the Gang of 8 with Chuck Schumer disqualifies him from being President. Rubio’s position on the issue is that he was double crossed by Schumer, who inserted a number of things into the bill that Rubio never agreed to initially and that he knew would scuttle the bill within the GOP. The response from many GOP voters – especially in the Trump camp – is this: If Rubio did not know that Chuck Schumer was bad news who would betray him, then he’s not fit to be President.
Why do I bring that up? Because of this:
Mike Barnacle: Who would you be willing to work with to cut a deal, any kind of a deal, what’s your instinct on that?
Trump: Well, I think that I’m going to be able to get along with Nancy Pelosi, I’ve always had a good relationship with Nancy Pelosi, I don’t think that’s going to be a problem. Reid’s going to be gone, I’ve always had a decent relationship with Reid, although obviously lately I haven’t been dealing with him so he’ll actually use my name as the ultimate of the billionaires in terms of people that you don’t want, but I’ve always had a great relationship with Harry Reid and frankly, if if weren’t running for office, I’d be able to deal with her, I’d be able to deal with Reid, I’d be able to deal with anybody. But, I think I’d be able to get along very will with Nancy Pelosi, and just about everybody. Hey look, I think I’ll be able to get along with Schumer, Chuck Schumer. I was always very good with Schumer. I was close with Schumer in many ways. And, you know, it’s important that you get along. It’s wonderful to say that you’re a maverick, and you’re going to stay up and you’re going to close up the country and all of the things, but you gotta get somebody to go along with you. You know, you have a lot of people… and that’s the problem that you have with Ted Cruz. He’s a guy that nobody likes and nobody trusts, and he is a nasty guy. He says things that are very nasty. So I have to be nastier than him and it’s just one of those things.
People are focusing (rightly) on the fact that Trump has now turned his back on everything he stood for when he started his campaign, and that’s without question the truth. People are focusing on the fact that Trump clearly believes in nothing other than himself, and that’s also true. People are focusing on the fact that Donald Trump says things that are insane and make no sense, such as “He says things that are very nasty. So I have to be nastier than him and it’s just one of those things.”
But what strikes me in this clip is what a gigantic naïf Donald Trump is. I have no doubt in my mind that Trump is buddies with Schumer, and possibly Pelosi, and that they have been friendly in the past. What I can’t get past is what a sucker Donald Trump is if he really thinks that once he gets into office, and he has an (R) after his name, that Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer are still going to be his buddies and that he can trust them to work with him in big faith. After having watched the entire tenure of George W. Bush, not to mention Barack Obama, he’s just as much of an idiot in terms of blindly trusting people who want to rip him apart as Obama was in cutting the deal with Iran.
I can’t decide if what’s worse – if Trump believes the things he was saying when he started this campaign, or if he believes the things he is saying now. Of course, being Trump, he might well just believe both.
