BREAKING: Denver Post Endorses Cory Gardner

I have the feeling that these days, newspaper endorsements move the needle very little if any at all in terms of actual voter behavior. However, the main reason for this is that they tend to be overwhelmingly rubber stamps for Democrat candidates. When a major metropolitan newspaper in a purple state like Colorado endorses a Republican – and does so with several withering broadsides at the Democrat candidate – it is a news event in and of itself. Especially when the Democrat hasn’t been caught on tape with a dead boy or a live farm animal. Thus, the Denver Post’s endorsement of [mc_name name=’Rep. Cory Gardner (R-CO)’ chamber=’house’ mcid=’G000562′ ] over [mc_name name=’Sen. Mark Udall (D-CO)’ chamber=’senate’ mcid=’U000038′ ] bears mentioning if only to point out, as the Post does, how obnoxious and off-the rails [mc_name name=’Sen. Mark Udall (D-CO)’ chamber=’senate’ mcid=’U000038′ ]’s campaign has been.

The Post’s editorial has many positive things to say about Gardner, who has by all accounts acquitted himself exceptionally well in this campaign. But the central complaint the Post has with Mark Uterus is something we’ve mentioned here before – that Udall refuses to run his campaign on anything other than abortion extremism and lies about [mc_name name=’Rep. Cory Gardner (R-CO)’ chamber=’house’ mcid=’G000562′ ]’s record. The Post’s broadside against Udall on this issue is especially notable given that the Post takes special care to point out that their views agree with Udall’s on the substance:

Udall is a fine man with good intentions (NB – no, he isn’t), and on some issues our views are closer to his than to Gardner’s. But he is not perceived as a leader in Washington and, with rare exceptions such as wind energy and intelligence gathering, he is not at the center of the issues that count — as his Democratic colleague, [mc_name name=’Sen. Michael Bennet (D-CO)’ chamber=’senate’ mcid=’B001267′ ], always seems to be.

Rather than run on his record, Udall’s campaign has devoted a shocking amount of energy and money trying to convince voters that Gardner seeks to outlaw birth control despite the congressman’s call for over-the-counter sales of contraceptives. Udall is trying to frighten voters rather than inspire them with a hopeful vision. His obnoxious one-issue campaign is an insult to those he seeks to convince.

No vulnerable Democrat deserves to lose in this cycle more than [mc_name name=’Sen. Mark Udall (D-CO)’ chamber=’senate’ mcid=’U000038′ ] does. This is something that even the Denver Post sees. On election day, let’s hope Colorado voters see the same.
