Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling is one of the most progressive celebrity authors out there these days. She is liberal in general, but specifically has been an advocate for LGBT issues for nearly her entire career. She’s even gone so far as to retro-actively tailor her Harry Potter universe to include gay characters and has reimagined the history of some favorite characters to include an LGBT background.

Despite her liberal bonafides, Rowling has been raked over the coals for the audacity of suggesting that men cannot be women. A few weeks ago she came under fire for responding to a story that substituted the word “women” for “people who menstruate.

Such a banal statement receiving so much hate seems insane, but we live in insane times. Despite Rowling’s well-known solidarity with gay rights activists, she was denounced by both fans and people in the celebrity realm, including the very people her story made rich beyond their wildest dreams.

However, unlike other outspoken celebrities, Rowling has not backed down from the reality of biology and continues to point out the ridiculous nature of the criticisms endured by anyone who suggests women are the only people who can be women. She is a proud feminist who believes people should live however they want to live, but finds a disturbing quality of misogyny in current transgender activism. In a tweet thread responding to a commenter who accused Rowling of hating her ovaries, the U.K.-based author doubled down on the truth, with a little smackdown energy for some added spice.

While this mentality of trans superiority over the female sex sounds nearly too insane to combat, it is important that those with far-reaching voices continue to push back against the current Dark Ages. J.K. Rowling is all of us right now.
