The undisputed Queen of Soul died on Thursday after a battle with pancreatic cancer. Aretha Franklin was 76. She died in hospice care in Detroit surrounded by her family.

Franklin began her recording career at the age of 14, singing gospel with her father and signed with Columbia Records in 1960. She was making Top 10 hits well into the ’90s and has performed for multiple presidents, including singing at the inauguration of Barack Obama.

The ground-breaking singer didn’t stop performing until her health issues forced her to, but Franklin’s voice was still as rich and soulful into her 70s as it ever was in her “prime”.

No one lives forever, but it’s hard to imagine that Franklin’s voice, hits and artistic contributions to this nation and the entire world will ever be forgotten.
