Nashville Mayor Megan Barry was forced to resign, and pleaded guilty to felony theft of more than $10,000 all due to an affair with her former bodyguard. The theft charge was due to the overtime accrued by Sgt. Robert Forrest Jr, her paramour, on the trips the two took. Yes, they broke the law, and Mrs Barry is now a convicted felon, but it’s not like she endangered the citizens of Music City.¹

Contrast that with leftist heroine Mayor Libby Schaaf of Oakland. Mrs Schaaf got advance word of an Immigration and Customs Enforcement raid in the hometown of my favorite team, the Oakland Raiders, and promptly squealed, via Twitter:

Acting ICE Director Tom Homan said:

What she did is no better than a gang lookout yelling ‘police’ when a police cruiser comes in the neighborhood, except she did it to an entire community. This is beyond the pale.

The lookout during a felony is an accessory to the felony, and can be convicted and jailed for just that; Mrs Schaaf deserves to go to prison.

Mrs Schaaf said:

I know that Oakland is a city of law-abiding immigrants and families who deserve to live free from the constant threat of arrest and deportation. I believe it is my duty and moral obligation as mayor to give those families fair warning when that threat appears imminent.

Except that, of the 232 illegal immigrants who were apprehended, 180 were, according to ICE, “‘either convicted criminals, had been issued a final order of removal and failed to depart the United States, or had been previously removed’ from the country and had come back illegally.” Of that 180, 115 “had prior felony convictions for serious or violent offenses, such as child sex crimes, weapons charges and assault, or had past convictions for significant or multiple misdemeanors.”

What about those who evaded capture?

• One Mexican citizen, previously deported in 2003, had convictions for unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor and a conviction for driving under the influence (DUI).
• One Mexican citizen who had a conviction for sodomizing a drugged victim in 2012, as well as a DUI from this year, and who had been previously deported in 2013.
• Another illegal immigrant from Mexico, previously deported in 2014 for a conviction for armed robbery, evaded capture.

One of us wonders just how a man convicted for anally raping a drugged victim in 2012 wasn’t still in prison. Even the soft-on-crime Obama Administration deported him in 2013, when he should have been in prison.

Anally raping a drugged and helpless victim should have had that man in prison for twenty or more years, yet he was released from prison — if he got any jail time at all — less than a year after he committed his crime. He had been an illegal immigrant then, so his predilection for crossing the border was known and documented; releasing him for simple deportation was barely different from just turning him loose in the community. The fact that he was back in the United States to get arrested for driving under the influence proves that yes, that was the effect: he was back in the community.

That he was arrested for DUI means that the police knew he was here, and any computer check should have indicated his criminal record. Was he even on probation, where getting caught in a crime would get him thrown in jail to serve remaining time?

A previously known illegal immigrant was punished with deportation rather than imprisonment, for armed robbery? That was less than five years ago; he should have still been in prison.

These were the people Mrs Schaaf was defending, these were the criminals Mrs Schaaf was aiding and abetting, these were the criminals Mrs Schaaf helped to evade capture and remain among the law-abiding citizens who had elected her mayor.

I cannot even begin to describe the irony here. The Democrats have attempted to make a big deal out of sexual abuse allegations,² yet it has been the actions of the Democrats — and, of course Mayor Schaaf is a Democrat — from Governor Jerry Brown (D-CA) on down in the Pyrite State which have turned loose violent rapists and child sexual predators, which have protected their places out in their communities.

I suppose that, for the Democrats, support for illegal immigration trumps protecting women from sexual assault, trumps protecting law-abiding citizens from armed robbers, trumps protecting their communities from violent crime and drunk drivers.
