Shooting at Kentucky State University, One Suspect in Custody

Multiple people were shot Tuesday on the campus of Kentucky State University in Frankfort, and a suspect is in custody, according to police.

In a post on Facebook from the Frankfort Police Department and Emergency 911, it reported the following:

Tuesday, December 9, 3:35PM: Frankfort Police Department responded to an incident on KSU's campus Tuesday afternoon, regarding an active aggressor.

Frankfort Police Department, in partnership with KSU Campus Police and the Franklin County Sheriff's Office have secured the campus and have a suspect in custody.

At this time, KSU campus is on lockdown until further notice. The department and university will release more details as they become available.

An update was then provided to the original post that read:

Update, 4:35 PM: Officials confirm one person is deceased, one has been transported to the hospital in stable but critical condition. A suspect remains in custody.

Authorities later provided an update indicating that there will be a press conference this evening to provide more details about the incident.

Democratic Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear posted a message on X about the shooting.

"We are aware of a reported shooting at Kentucky State University in Frankfort. At this time, we are aware of some injuries," the post read. "We will share more information as available. Law enforcement are on scene, and a suspect has been arrested. Let's pray for all those affected."

He later posted a video emphasizing that violence has no place in our society.

"The shooting that took place today at Kentucky State University appears to be an isolated incident - not a mass shooting," Beshar said. "The suspect has been arrested, and there is no ongoing threat. Two individuals were critically injured, and I am sad to share that one has now passed away."

"Violence has no place in our commonwealth or country," he added. "Let's please pray for the families affected and for our KSU students. Let's also pray for a world where these things don't happen. Thank you to our brave law enforcement who acted quickly to protect our people."
