Watercooler 6/23/16: Democrat Hypocrisy Edition

Congressman who was on no fly list now wants to use it to take away everyone’s rights

You would think after the late Senator Ted Kennedy had repeated problems with being put on the “No Fly List”, (Most people would have preferred him on the no drive list), even Democrats might get the idea that being able to arbitrarily take away people’s rights without due process was a bad idea.

Well for some people, it appears not only is general history not instructive but personal history doesn’t do it either.

John Lewis revived Wednesday one of the most evocative forms of protest from the civil rights movement — the sit-in — to demand House Republicans move on gun control.

In a move rich with historic symbolism, the civil rights icon and Democratic congressman from Georgia led a dramatic protest inside the House of Representatives. He and fellow Democrats sat down at the front of the chamber in an unusual demonstration of civil disobedience challenging Republican House Speaker Paul Ryan.

The irony here is Rep. Lewis was mistakenly put on the “No Fly List” and couldn’t get himself taken off of it.

John Lewis’s Long Year

On the same day Kennedy revealed his flight troubles, civil rights icon and longtime Rep. John Lewis revealed he, too, had been snarled by the watchlist dragnet. According to his office, the Georgia Democrat had over the course of a year been held up 35 to 40 times. Despite reaching out to a number of federal agencies over that period, Lewis’ name had remained on a list.

If you couldn’t guess, CNN in their article about the house sit in, didn’t mention Rep Lewis problems with the “No Fly List”, nor did it ask him any direct questions about it.

Nancy Pelosi’s didn’t see a Republican majority coming moment.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi on Wednesday called on Speaker Paul Ryan to “turn on this microphone” on the House floor, which was shut off after Democrats broke the rules by taking over the chamber earlier in the day

Apparently she has a short memory or a really big sense of entitlement (possibly both).

Pelosi did the same thing, however, when roles were reversed in 2008 and she was the House speaker. When GOP lawmakers refused to adjourn for the August recess in order to press for a vote on offshore drilling, Democratic leadership cut the microphones and turned off the lights in the House chamber.

Hopefully Speaker Ryan cuts both the lights and the air conditioning as well. I understand summer in D.C. isn’t pleasant.

Democrats Will Soon Get Their Own Sit In.

They say apples don’t fall far from the tree, so it will be interesting to see how the Democrats deal with their supporters staging sit ins at their national convention.

As the Democratic National Convention approaches, the four-day event will be heated thanks to more planned protests reported by CNN.

Planned protesters now include Democracy Spring and those who attended the People’s Summit. Former State Senator Nina Turner, a Sanders supporter, said she expects “hundreds of thousands of people” at the Philadelphia convention.

The protesters plan to disrupt the proceedings for social change, Democracy Spring Director Kai Newkirk noted.
