In the Mexican state of Veracruz, for example, at least 17 journalists have disappeared or been murdered since 2010, presumably by drug-traffickers. The gangs’ reach is long: one journalist fled to Mexico City, where he was tracked down and butchered. And their methods are brutal: in February the body of a reporter was found dumped by the roadside, handcuffed, half-naked and with a plastic bag over her head.
It’s a great article to read. The one thing it really doesn’t cover well are corporations like Google/Facebook/Twitter which project a neutral front but are very busy shaping news and providing support.
