So, with all this new information coming out about the FBI’s deep dive into the Clinton Email Scandal Part Deaux, the Wall Street Journal tosses out as an aside that the Clinton Foundation also appears to be under investigation.
New details show that senior law-enforcement officials repeatedly voiced skepticism of the strength of the evidence in a bureau investigation of the Clinton Foundation, sought to condense what was at times a sprawling cross-country effort, and, according to some people familiar with the matter, told agents to limit their pursuit of the case.
That led to frustrations among some investigators, who viewed FBI leadership as uninterested in probing the charity, these people said. Others involved disagreed sharply, defending FBI bosses and saying Mr. McCabe in particular was caught between an increasingly acrimonious fight for control between the Justice Department and FBI agents pursuing the Clinton Foundation case.
It isn’t unusual for field agents to favor a more aggressive approach than supervisors and prosecutors think is merited. But the internal debates about the Clinton Foundation show the high stakes when such disagreements occur surrounding someone who is running for president.
Now, a couple months ago, CNN reported that there was no such investigation. Their claim was that the FBI shut down all requests to open an investigation. Tom Fuentes, a current CNN analyst and former assistant director at the FBI, says that, in fact, there is and investigation and that the CNN investigation team got their facts wrong.
“The reports that three divisions came in with a request to Washington to open cases and that they were turned down by the Department of Justice, that’s not true,” he said, referring to the CNN report.
“What was turned down was that they be the originating office. Headquarters at the FBI made the determination that the investigation would go forward as a comprehensive unified case and be coordinated,” he added.
It would appear that everything the Clintons touch is quickly becoming poisoned. It’s a fascinating turn of events, but also incredibly frustrating that all of these revelations appear to be coming out with just over a week to go before the election. An election, I might add, that the subject at the center of all this drama, is expected to win handily.
I’m not convinced that these stories are enough to sink her. I’m also not convinced that a fully weaponized Department of Justice will do anything about what the FBI finds as we get into the Clinton presidency. Instead, they will circle the wagons and pretend that everything is actually on the up and up. And we will be left to deal with the aftermath of every terrible thing she has done and will do as president.
