Fareed Zakaria seems fine with white people killing themselves

White, middle class Americans are dying at a much faster rate than any other group, and Fareed Zakaria knows exactly why: The welfare state is not large enough and we still hold on to this misguided belief in the American Dream. In fact, he specifically cites Europe’s much larger welfare state as a template we should look at for our own use.

Zakaria writes all of this in an op-ed at the Washington Post, and attributes the high suicide rate of working class whites to their realization that they aren’t the elite workforce of the United States anymore. These Middle America white people, he explains, are the reason Donald Trump has so much support (bolding mine).

The United States is going through a great power shift. Working-class whites don’t think of themselves as an elite group. But, in a sense, they have been, certainly compared with blacks, Hispanics, Native Americans and most immigrants. They were central to America’s economy, its society, indeed its very identity. They are not anymore. Donald Trump has promised that he will change this and make them win again. But he can’t. No one can. And deep down, they know it.

You know what normal people do when they write about increasing death rates among a segment of the population? They show remorse. They show concern. They often suggest there is a potential for change. But, Zakaria doesn’t do that. It’s almost like he is giddy about this group of white people getting exactly what they deserve.

And, he can’t help himself. He has to go the extra mile. He has to say that it’s these same people who have rejected the European model that are killing themselves because they don’t have and simply can’t get what they used to. They cling to the idea of the American Dream, but in his mind, the American Dream is the product of white minds. Minority groups like blacks and Hispanics are growing in the American workforce and forcing the white middle class workers out of their dream.

This is absolute hatred of an entire class of citizen, barely hidden beneath a layer of smug satisfaction, and it’s a shameful celebration of death.
