If the Democrats win the U.S. Senate, Chuck Schumer will become the new majority leader. The Senator (and beneficiary of many Trump campaign donations) is reaching out to the Bernie Sanders lunatic fringe with an extreme leftist agenda in order to attract money and votes to flip the Senate tomorrow.
The Washington Post is reporting that Schumer is hinting at a Democratic Senate agenda in a last minute fundraising email targeted at influential progressives.
Schumer will make the appeal as part of a Progressive Change Campaign Committee fundraising email and the last-minute fundraising pitch is the latest sign the Sanders coalition succeeded in shifting the Democratic Party further to the left during the 2016 campaign.
The message makes promises of what “will be possible with a Democratic Majority.”
“Major investment in jobs, debt-free college, immigration reform, criminal justice reform, closing corporate tax loopholes, a public option, paid family leave, raising the minimum wage, expanding Social Security, and confirming Supreme Court Justices who will overturn Citizens United will all be possible with a Democratic Majority”
It is not clear whether “debt-free college” means taxpayers paying tuition, forgiveness of existing student loans, or both. A public option would push the failing Obamacare scheme one step closer to single payer government health care. Paid family leave and raising the minimum wage will hamper economic growth.
It is a laundry list of burdens for taxpayers and small businesses, not to mention a promised assault on the first amendment. It is the kind of agenda which has no regard for liberty or fiscal responsibility.
The Tuesday email aims to convince Sanders supporters to donate to last-minute get-out-the-vote efforts for mainstream Democrats running for Senate. About half a dozen GOP incumbents are in tight races in states like Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, New Hampshire and Missouri. Democrats hope that high turnout from progressives could help put Democrats running in those states over the top.
The GOP’s hopes of retaining control of the Senate ride on several toss up races breaking their way. By some reports Republican hopes are rising and they may just keep the Senate. If the Democrats succeed in gaining control, it may be by only a slim margin and possibly only for a short time.
