Donald Trump’s answer to everything seems to be more lawsuits.
The GOP candidate reiterated his desire to sue reporters for libel on Sunday. This comes right after the press seized upon his threats to sue the women who accused him of sexual assault rather than the rest of his speech in Gettysburg.
Trump inexplicably brought up his sex scandals in his Pennsylvania speech about his “contract with America” and appears to have been blindsided by the press doing something anyone else could have predicted. The man who during the primary was celebrated by supporters for his ability to handle the media, really seems to have no instincts for doing so.
In an interview with CBS4 in Miami’s Jim DeFede, CBS4 in Miami, Donald Trump expressed his desire to make America’s first amendment more like England’s press freedom laws so he can sue reporters for picking on him.
DEFEDE: Again you’ve brought up the press. In the past you have talked about wanting to amend laws to and rework things to make it easier to sue do you think there is too much protection allowed in the first amendment?
TRUMP: Well in England they have a system where you can actually sue if someone says something wrong. Our press is allowed to say whatever they want and get away with it. And i think we should go to a system where if they do something wrong… I’m a big believer tremendous believer of the freedom of the press. Nobody believes it stronger than me but if they make terrible, terrible mistakes and those mistakes are made on purpose to injure people. I’m not just talking about me I’m talking anybody else then yes, i think you should have the ability to sue them.
Trump’s claim to be a “tremendous believer” in freedom of the press should be met with the same response as Barack Obama’s claim to be a believer in the free market.
Of course he’s just talking about himself. He’s an entitled, thin-skinned man-child crying “no fair” when things don’t go his way. When Donald’s pal at the National Enquirer made ludicrous mistakes “on purpose” to damage his primary opponents he didn’t seem to be too concerned about other people being maligned unfairly by the press. He was more than happy to use it to his advantage.
DEFEDE: So you’d like the laws to be closer to what they have in England?
TRUMP: Well, in England you have a good chance of winning. And deals are made and apologies are made. Over here they don’t have to apologize. They can say anything they want about you or me and there doesn’t have to be any apology. England has a system where if they are wrong things happen.
Make America apologize again, at least to Trump.
Obviously the press has been grossly unfair to Trump since he gained the GOP nomination. It would be no different for any other nominee. Media bias is not new. If we had a nominee who had been a Republican longer than his period between haircuts, maybe there wouldn’t be so many self inflicted wounds. More lawsuits aren’t going to make America great again. Neither is a self obsessed candidate who can only view issues in terms of his own personal vendettas.
