FBI Raids Home, Office of LAUSD Superintendent Alberto Carvalho; Was He the Man Led Away in Handcuffs?

Federal agents raided Los Angeles Unified School District Superintendent Alberto Carvalho's office, his home in San Pedro, and a location in Broward County, Florida on Wednesday morning pursuant to a sealed search warrant. According to Carvalho's neighbors in San Pedro, the raid started around 6 AM, and a man was led away in handcuffs. It's not yet clear if Carvalho is the man who was arrested.

Regarding the Los Angeles locations, a spokesperson for the US Attorney's Office for the Central District of California told ABC7, "Law enforcement is executing a judicially approved search warrant at those locations. We have no further comment."

Fox News' Matt Finn reports that while we don't know if Carvalho was the main target or what types of crimes are being investigated, "the activity of federal agents was consistent with things like financial crimes." Sources told ABC7 that the allegations are "white collar" and not related to immigration. Carvalho, by his own admission, came to the United States illegally from Portugal when he was 17 years old, but later became a naturalized citizen.

During the anti-ICE riots in Los Angeles last June, Carvalho instructed LAUSD police to interfere with federal agents conducting immigration enforcement at graduation sites.

"So I want to be reassuring to our community. Every single graduation site is a protected site. I have directed our own police force to redouble their efforts and establish perimeters of safety around graduation sites, to intervene and interfere with any federal agency who may want to take action during these joyous times that we call graduation. Not on our watch."

In early January, California Gov. Gavin Newsom singled out Carvalho when touting the state's alleged progress in education during his final State of the State address.

"It's a point of pride that those gains are particularly pronounced in Los Angeles, the nation's second-largest school district.

"I just want to say this to the teachers, the classified employees, and the parents of LA Unified school kids, you should be very proud of the progress you're making, particularly proud of your leader, who's here, Superintendent of Public Education [sic] Alberto Carvalho, who's here with us today, who's just been doing a remarkable job. Alberto, I appreciate you coming all the way up from Los Angeles."

Carvalho was named LAUSD Superintendent in 2022, and was Superintendent of Miami-Dade Schools for 14 years prior to that. He and his wife of 21 years, Maria Borgia Carvalho, who works for AbbVie pharmaceuticals, own five properties in southern Florida in addition to their Los Angeles-area home, though none of the Florida addresses are in the neighborhood where the FBI raid occurred Wednesday.

Late Wednesday morning LAUSD issued the following statement:

"We have been informed of law enforcement activity at Los Angeles Unified School District headquarters and at the home of the Superintendent. The District is cooperating with the investigation and we do not have further information at this time."

This is a developing story.
