While California Gov. Gavin Newsom cosplays being president, promotes his election rigging scheme, and flame-posts on X against President Donald Trump and Republicans, his attorney general Rob Bonta has been busy furthering the state's progressive aims, which include his attempts to torment the Trump administration. Sadly, part of Bonta's marching orders also involves tormenting the law-abiding citizens of the Golden State with frivolous lawsuits.
El Cajon is one of the few red cities left in San Diego County. As opposed to Chicago's mayor, El Cajon Mayor Bill Wells has no problem cooperating with law enforcement in the state and outside of it. Bonta thinks this is terrible because the information could be used for ICE to target some random illegal, or a woman fleeing Texas to get an abortion might be swept up in the information. Despite warnings from Bonta's office, the El Cajon Police Department has essentially told Bonta to pound sand.
So, Bonta is once again spending California tax dollars to sue California citizens. Because despite a $12 billion budget deficit, California has all the money in the world to defend its progressive and anti-Trump agenda... amirite? Bonta took to X on Friday to proudly announce he was suing the City of El Cajon.

El Cajon and its Police Department will be held accountable for jeopardizing people’s privacy.
You mean like in 2022, when Bonta jeopardized the privacy of the state's concealed-carry gun owners by making publicly available a firearms data dashboard that included their names, addresses, and personal information, all in the name of “transparency and information sharing?"
Mmmkay.

From the CA AG's website:
"To protect public safety, you need public trust. As the Trump Administration continues to target California’s immigrant communities, it is important that state and local law enforcement are not seen as a tool in furthering the President’s mass deportation agenda,” said Attorney General Bonta. “When information about Californians leaves the state, we no longer have any say over how it is used or shared. That’s why the California Legislature passed SB 34 — to ensure information about Californians remains here in California. Yet El Cajon has knowingly and repeatedly refused to comply with state law, jeopardizing the privacy and safety of individuals in its community. Today, we’re asking a court to put this issue to bed and definitively affirm that California law prohibits the sharing of license plate data with federal and out-of-state agencies.”
Bonta invokes Trump, which lets you know that if it were a Democrat president or one that furthered their progressive agenda, El Cajon would be just another town you pass on the way to the Mexican border. If Newsom and Bonta gave one whit about public safety or "public trust," they would fund Prop 36 so that law enforcement can perform their duties as the California people voted, to enforce the laws and ensure public safety.
The lawsuit filed in San Diego Superior Court alleges El Cajon has flouted California's law prohibiting ALPR-data sharing with out-of-state law enforcement agencies despite the California Department of Justice contacting El Cajon's police chief over the issue.
In a statement, the California Attorney General's Office alleged the practice both raises concerns regarding privacy and for immigrants, women who might travel to California for reproductive care, or protesters.
[...]
Senate Bill 34 bars local law enforcement from sharing information from license plate readers with federal agencies or entities outside California. The attorney general said the bill was passed to ensure information about Californians remains in the state. But once data crosses state lines, there is no control over how it is used or shared. El Cajon violated that policy, putting people living in the state at risk, he said.
Along with the city, El Cajon's police department and its police chief, Jeremiah Larson, are named as defendants.
Mayor Wells has been pushing back and doing so effectively.

The State of California is suing El Cajon for doing what every city should — keeping our community safe. This isn’t about privacy; it’s about politics. Sacramento doesn’t like that we’re a conservative city that refuses to fall in line with their agenda. I won’t back down from standing up for the people of El Cajon.
Wells has been on media quite often, stating his case articulately. He only has one issue to hammer. Newsom and Bonta are juggling too many plates, and they're bound to all crash at some point.

On Friday, I learned the State of California plans to sue our city for sharing information that helps catch criminals and protect families. Let’s call this what it is — political retaliation. The state can’t stand that El Cajon refuses to play by their rules, so now they’re trying to bully us into silence. I won’t let that happen.
Newsom and Bonta are good at bullying — not so good at winning. Huntington Beach is a case in point. This Orange County bastion is unapologetically pro-America, pro-Trump, and pro-citizen. In 2022, they flipped their entire city council because they didn't like the way the prior administration tried to force COVID regulations on its citizens, ruining businesses in the process. Bonta has sued Huntington Beach because they refuse to build affordable housing, despite California's wholesale push for every city to be a 15-minute city. Bonta also sued Huntington Beach because they instituted the requirement of voter ID for all their elections. In terms of housing, the courts have given sway to Newsom and Bonta, but Huntington Beach continues the appeals process. This is an issue where many smaller municipalities are pushing against this globalist agenda, so expect this one or another lawsuit to ultimately reach the Supreme Court.
But in terms of the vaccine and mask mandates, the revitalized council and mayor instituted a ban against both. After Huntington Beach voted to institute voter ID, and California sued, California lost. So, in terms of this city and a few others, California doesn't have a great track record. And when it comes to Newsom's federal overreach, the courts keep stamping that "L" on his shiny forehead; he just refuses to acknowledge it.
Despite this, Newsom and Bonta will continue to waste Californian taxpayers' money in order to mount their progressive crusades.

El Cajon Mayor Wells is not the only elected official who knows how to use X. In a Media statement posted to the platform, Wells called out this lawsuit by the State of California for what it is: a political stunt and an attempt to force this red-leaning city to bow the knee to Newsom's progressive agenda.

MEDIA STATEMENT: On Friday, I was notified that the State of California has decided to sue the City of El Cajon for sharing information that helps keep our community and our country safe. Let’s be clear — this is nothing more than a political stunt and an attempt to bully a conservative city for standing up for public safety.
For years, Sacramento has looked for ways to punish cities like ours because we refuse to fall in line with their ideology. They’ve chosen politics over people, and now they’re using the courts to intimidate those of us who disagree with them.
I make no apologies for protecting our residents. The people of El Cajon expect their leaders to keep them safe, not to bow to the latest political agenda coming out of the Capitol. California’s priorities have become backwards — too often putting criminals before law-abiding citizens. I refuse to play a part in that.
Our city’s actions have always been guided by one simple principle: the safety and security of the people we serve. Sharing information with trusted law enforcement partners is a cornerstone of effective policing, and we will not apologize for cooperating with agencies that help us catch criminals, prevent crime, and protect innocent lives. Instead of attacking cities that are doing their job, the Attorney General should focus on the growing crime, homelessness, and lawlessness plaguing our state.
Ouch. That's going to leave a mark — let's hope this bruise stays prominent and works to sink Newsom's presidential aspirations. Bonta and his wife are constantly under scrutiny for their less-than-ethical dealings, which is why he stopped short of announcing a gubernatorial run. Both of these TDS-riddled poster boys are scraping the bottom of the barrel of irrelevancy.
