IN MY ORBIT: Josh Hawley's Defining Moment

The mob has arrived. No, not the one that “breached” the Capitol, the one calling for the expulsion and/or resignation of Missouri Senator Josh Hawley. Hawley was the first Senator out of the gate to stand and offer a challenge to the counting of Electoral College votes, something that is Constitutional and which Democrats have done in 2001, 2004, and 2017.

Sadly, outside actors who, despite the media narrative, are not clearly Trump supporters, entered the Capitol and caused unrest that resulted in five deaths. Now the mob wants Hawley’s head and is mounting an astroturf campaign to paint him as a seditionist and insurrectionist who incited the violence perpetrated at the Capitol on January 6.

POLITICO gleefully reported that former staffers of Claire McCaskill, the incumbent Hawley defeated in 2018, have mounted a PAC whose sole goal is to remove him from office and ensure he never again attains elected office.

“A group of ex-staffers for former Missouri Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill are launching a new organization dedicated to preventing Hawley from winning any further election, whether it’s reelection to the Senate in 2024 or in a future presidential run, according to a source familiar with the effort. Hawley defeated McCaskill in 2018.

“The new group is called JOSH PAC, an acronym for Just Oust Seditious Hacks. The organization formally registered with the Federal Election Commission this week and has quietly set up a website and Twitter account.

“ ‘Josh Hawley has no shame and put his own personal ambitions ahead of America. JOSH PAC will work to ensure that Hawley never wins another election,’ the source said.”

And Democrat Senator Joe Manchin, who claims he would not support nuking the filibuster or packing the courts, thinks that using the 14th Amendment to remove Hawley from office would not be a bad idea.

” ‘That should be a consideration,’ Manchin, a Democrat from West Virginia, said when asked if the 14th Amendment should be triggered during an interview with PBS’s “Firing Line.”

“The 14th Amendment says that no lawmaker holding office ‘shall have engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the same, or given aid or comfort to the enemies thereof. But Congress may by a vote of two-thirds of each House, remove such disability.’ “

Everybody hates Josh, including his former mentor, Senator John Danforth:

“Danforth, who was a key supporter of Hawley in his race against former Sen. Claire McCaskill, said lending credence to President Donald Trump’s ‘false claim that the election was stolen is a highly destructive attack on our constitutional government.’

“ ‘It is the opposite of conservative; it is radical,’ Danforth said in the statement. ‘As one friend asked me, “What are my grandchildren to think of America if they are told that elections are fraudulent?” ’ ”

Hawley was part of the Darling set I talked about in my article, Republicans Want to Wash Trump Out of Their Hair, But the Dye is Permanent Now.

Once he announced, there was a lot of big money and Republican support poured into his campaign against Democrat incumbent Claire McCaskill in the 2018 midterms.

Hawley defeated McCaskill, and high hopes were invested in the junior Senator’s time and work in D.C. Hawley has been given some plum committee assignments, most notably the Judiciary Committee, as well as Armed Services; Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs; Small Business and Entrepreneurship; and the Special Committee on Aging.

Before Hawley went to D.C. he racked up an impressive record as an attorney, a graduate of Stanford University and Yale Law School, Hawley litigated at the Supreme Court of the United States, the federal courts of appeals, and in state court, on issues that focused on civil liberties. Hawley was one of the lead attorneys in the landmark Burwell v. Hobby Lobby case, which helped to gut Obamacare. He was also a lead attorney in the Hosanna-Tabor case at the Supreme Court, protecting the rights of churches.

Hawley became Missouri’s attorney general in 2017, before running for the United States Senate. Definitely the pedigree of a Republican Darling and someone who is being groomed for a presidential run.

But the mob wants to not only remove him from office, but to destroy any future aspirations of higher political office. Heck, what they really want is to see him in jail! Pressure has been mounting lunatic leftists like Democrats Chris Coons, Chris Murphy, and AOC, as well as their lapdogs in the complicit legacy media.

The New York Times breathlessly asked,

“How did we get to the point where one of the bright young stars of the Republican Party appears to be at war with both truth and democracy?”

The hit piece went on to pull quotes from speeches and interviews and use them out of context to prove that Senator Josh Hawley is a dangerous theocrat. When there is more proven evidence that the New York Times are dangerous anti-Semites.

I thought with the confirmation of Justices Brett Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett that we were already in The Handmaid’s Tale. Now we’re in a prequel? Make up your mind, people.

The mob has been instrumental in convincing Simon & Schuster to rescind a book offer to Hawley.

Now, hotelier Loews has gotten in on the fun by canceling a Hawley fundraiser that was scheduled for February in Orlando.

This type of behavior is more incitement than anything that Hawley did in his duty as an elected representative, and he took to the Missouri Times to say as much. In an opinion piece, Hawley defended his objection:

“Some wondered why I stuck with my objection following the violence at the Capitol. The reason is simple: I will not bow to a lawless mob or allow criminals to drown out the legitimate concerns of my constituents.

“I am proud to represent you in Congress. Your voice helps make this country and our democracy strong. These are difficult days for our country. All I can promise you is that I will do my best, day in and day out, to represent your voice, no matter who criticizes me. And I will do my utmost to preserve, protect and defend this republic that we call home.”

This is a defining moment for the young Senator. Will he continue to hold his ground, even if it means the mob succeeds in getting him removed from office? Or will he cave to the woke mob and the Republican establishment in order to reacquire his Darling status?

Only time will tell. Hawley still has the support of the 70 million who voted for Trump, and the even greater number who feel this election was fraudulent. If Hawley can weather the slings, arrows, character assassination, and demonetization, he will become the face of the party leadership that matters. In the past, he has been a champion not only of civil liberties, but the America-first agenda. If Hawley holds true to that path, and true to his commitment to his constituents, he will lay a bedrock foundation from which to build an even brighter political future.
