Another maritime incident involving a ship linked to Israel occurred on Sunday when attackers seized a tanker off the coast of Aden, Yemen. The vessel, named the Central Park, is managed by Zodiac Maritime and was confirmed to be seized, according to the company and a private intelligence firm.
Currently, it is not known who has captured the vessel. But given the current geopolitical climate in the Middle East, it might raise questions over whether it is tied to the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza.
Attackers seized a tanker linked to Israel off the coast of Yemen on Sunday, authorities said. While no group immediately claimed responsibility, it comes as at least two other maritime attacks in recent days have been linked to the Israel-Hamas war.
The attackers seized the Liberian-flagged Central Park, managed by Zodiac Maritime, in the Gulf of Aden, the company and private intelligence firm Ambrey said. An American defense official, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss intelligence matters, also confirmed to The Associated Press that the attack took place.
Zodiac called the seizure “a suspected piracy incident.”
“Our priority is the safety of our 22 crew onboard,” Zodiac said in a statement. “The Turkish-captained vessel has a multinational crew consisting of a crew of Russian, Vietnamese, Bulgarian, Indian, Georgian and Filipino nationals. The vessel is carrying a full cargo of phosphoric acid.”
Zodiac described the vessel as being owned by Clumvez Shipping Inc., though other records directly linked Zodiac as the owner. London-based Zodiac Maritime is part of Israeli billionaire Eyal Ofer’s Zodiac Group. British corporate records listed two men with the last name Ofer as a current and former director of Clumvez Shipping, including Daniel Guy Ofer, who is also a director at Zodiac Maritime.
This story has emerged amidst a backdrop of escalating maritime tensions linked to the war in Gaza. About a week before this incident, another ship associated with an Israeli billionaire was reportedly attacked by a suspected Iranian drone in the Indian Ocean. The attack is believed to be part of the fighting in Gaza.
Recently, Iranian-backed Houthi terrorists in Yemen seized another Israeli-owned vessel that was in international waters.
The Tehran-backed Houthis released a statement claiming responsibility, with Houthi spokesperson Yahya Saree saying in a statement that the rebels “carried out a military operation in the Red Sea, the results of which were the seizure of an Israeli ship and taking it to the Yemeni coast.”
He said the Houthis were “dealing with the ship’s crew in accordance with the teachings and values of our Islamic religion,” reiterating repeated threats to target any Israel-linked vessels in the Red Sea due to Israel’s “brutal aggression” against Hamas terrorists in Gaza.
The motive and identity of the attackers in the Central Park seizure remain unknown, but the situation is being monitored by U.S. and coalition forces. American naval forces have advised other vessels to steer clear of the area.
This incident is yet another that could indicate growing tensions in the region between other parties who are not directly involved in the Israel-Hamas war. It seems other anti-Israel elements are taking advantage of the fighting to take shots at Israel by seizing vessels owned by its citizens. The targeting of commercial shipping highlights the vulnerability of maritime trade routes during the war and underscores the possibility that these routes could become flashpoints for broader geopolitical clashes.
